Pentagon earlier confirmed the deaths of two service members at a base in Jordan, the recovery of the remains of a third missing service member, and the death of another U.S. military member in Iraq during a controlled detonation of an unexploded Iranian kamikaze drone.
U.S. President Donald Trump publicly declared that Washington will retaliate for the loss of American lives, emphasizing that every attack originating from Iran "will have consequences."

On July 20, the U.S. Armed Forces launched a new wave of air and missile strikes against targets inside Iran, executing an operation ordered directly by the Commander-in-Chief.

July 5: The U.S. Armed Forces launched a massive strike against military infrastructure in Iran, hitting over 140 targets. The operation came in response to IRGC forces shelling a Cyprus-flagged commercial container ship in the Strait of Hormuz.
July 8: U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) executed a second series of airstrikes targeting southern Iran, including the port cities of Chabahar and Bushehr, following Iranian drone attacks on three commercial tankers.
July 12: Iran declared the complete closure of the Strait of Hormuz to maritime shipping following a fresh incident involving a civilian vessel, stating the restriction would remain until further notice. Tehran also threatened additional strikes against U.S. bases if Washington escalated further.
July 14: Iran launched missile and drone barrages targeting facilities in Kuwait, Bahrain, and Jordan, claiming the strikes were direct retaliation for U.S. bombings.
July 15: CENTCOM officially announced that the United States re-established a naval blockade against Iran.
July 16: Tehran threatened to deliver a massive retaliatory strike if President Trump carried out threats to hit critical Iranian infrastructure.
