The Los Angeles Lakers have been looking for more pieces to add to their roster in recent weeks, with free agent wing Jonathan Kuminga’s name coming up frequently in discussions. While talks of a sign and trade with the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for Kuminga have largely gone quiet, there’s still a chance that the former lottery pick could sign with Los Angeles in restricted free agency.
However, not everyone is so convinced that Kuminga is worth all of the buzz he’s been getting this summer, including ESPN NBA insider Brian Windhorst, who recently relayed his thoughts on the “Hoop Collective” podcast.
“The outside interest in what happens to him is mind-boggling to me. The amount of attention and coverage that is paid to Jonathan Kuminga’s contractual situation, I cannot compute it,” said Windhorst, per NBA on ESPN on YouTube.

Kuminga played the first few years of his career with the Golden State Warriors, which naturally allowed his profile to grow larger than a player of his caliber’s normally would due to the high volume of national attention the team got. Kuminga was traded from the Warriors to the Hawks at last year’s deadline, and he went on to have an up and down stint in Atlanta, at times looking like a difference maker in their playoff series vs the New York Knicks, while at others being rendered virtually unplayable.
Clearly, Windhorst is not among those who view Kuminga as a true difference-maker, even for a Lakers team that needs to add length and athleticism to its roster at all costs, both of which Kuminga has.
In any case, it could still be a while before Kuminga makes his decision in free agency.
