The Denver Nuggets came into the offseason with questions surrounding what changes would be made on the team ahead of next season. There was a willingness to do whatever they needed to improve the team, and that meant trading some of their key players. Cam Johnson was in those conversations as they looked to create more cap space, but the Nuggets are walking back their efforts, according to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype.
“Numerous teams have called the Denver Nuggets hoping they’d be willing to dump forward Cam Johnson, who’s owed $23.06 million in the final year of his contract, but those inquiries have been rebuffed, league sources told HoopsHype,” Scotto wrote.
“After shooting career-highs from the field (.480) and beyond the arc (.430), Denver was pleased with his production despite injuries limiting Johnson to 54 starts last season. In Johnson’s last 15 regular-season games, he averaged 15.2 points on 56.2 percent shooting from the field and 48.2 percent from downtown.”

NBA insiders Marc Stein and Jake Fischer noted at the beginning of the month that the Nuggets were rebuffing their trade offers for Johnson.
“We’re told that the Nuggets have rebuffed several trade offers from teams attempting to pry away Cam Johnson,” Stein and Fischer wrote. “Some rival teams projected the Nuggets to prioritize trying to trade Braun in the wake of a first-round exit, but the timing was clearly suboptimal given Braun’s injuries last season and the fact that his five-year deal is only just beginning in 2026-27.”
That makes for an interesting case regarding the Nuggets, as they’re still trying to find a way to sign Peyton Watson to a new contract. They can’t do it at this time because they don’t have the money, and if they don’t shed Johnson’s salary, other players such as Christian Braun or Aaron Gordon might be traded.
If anything, the Nuggets might just let Watson walk to another team and stick with what they have.
