Wizards of the Coast revealed the new and returning mechanics that will appear in Magic: The Gathering's The Hobbit set. They revealed the set's mechanics during The Hobbit debut stream hosted from MagicCon: Amsterdam 2026. These mechanics draw inspiration from J.R.R. Tolkien's classic high fantasy novel and adapt them into Magic.
Here are all the mechanics that will appear in The Hobbit set and how each of them work:
Storied
Storied is a new mechanic that's based on telling the stories of your legendary adventures to inspire your comrades. It is a static ability that has two requirements:
- First, you need to control a permanent with the Storied mechanic.
- Second, you need to control three or more artifacts, legendaries, and/or Sagas.
After meeting these requirements, you'll have an enduring story for the rest of the game. Once you have an enduring story, you get the bonuses from your cards with Storied that require it. For example, Thorin Oakenshield gives all artifacts and creatures you control ward 1 when you have an enduring story.
Storied functions similarly to the Ascend mechanic introduced in Rivals of Ixalan. Both are static abilities that have similar conditions, although Storied requires more specific permanent types. Once you have an enduring story, it can't be taken away from you similar to when you acquire the city's blessing from Ascend.
Recruit
Recruit is the next new mechanic introduced in The Hobbit. When you recruit, you draw a card then discard a card. If you discarded a nonland card, you create a 1/1 white Human Soldier creature token.
It functions similarly to the Connive mechanic. Both mechanics help you filter your hand, except the payoffs for discarding nonland cards are different. While connive helps you empower your creatures with +1/+1 counters, recruit helps you go wide.
Hone Counters
Hone counters are the third new mechanic introduced in this set. It represents honing your equipment, making your blades sharper and deadlier. A hone counter on an equipment gives the creature it's equipped to +1/+0 for each hone counter on it.
Various cards in the set can put hone counters onto your equipment. Equipment like Sting, Bilbo's Sword have ways to gain hone counters themselves. In this case, it gets a hone counter for each creature a target opponent controls.
Adventures
A high fantasy novel like The Hobbit tells the adventures of its characters. This is why the set features Adventure as one of its returning mechanics. Adventure is a subtype found in some cards in the set. Each adventure is an instant or sorcery with their own name and mana cost found on a card's lower left.
When you cast a card's adventure spell, you exile it as it resolves. You can then cast or play the rest of the card later from exile.
Amass
Amass is the second returning mechanic featured in The Hobbit set. It represents the growing threats or armies of evil that the heroes must overcome. The Amass mechanic lets you do two things:
- Put X +1/+1 counters on an Army you control then gives it the subtype of the creature you Amass.
- If you don't control an Army, you create a 0/0 Army creature token first.
For example, Bolg of the North lets you amass Goblins X. If you already have an existing army, such as an Orc or Zombie army, you put X +1/+1 counters on them. Your Orc or Zombie army then gains the Goblin subtype too. But if you don't have an existing army, you create a 0/0 black Goblin Army creature token first.
Magic: The Gathering's The Hobbit set is scheduled for release on August 14, 2026. The set's prerelease events will be held from August 7 to 13.
