With the Boston Red Sox currently on a 14-game win streak, the AL East has become even more of a hotly contested race. All five teams should make some noise one way or the other prior to the trade deadline.
Perhaps the franchise most eager to make a move is the Tampa Bay Rays. They hold a two game lead in the division at 58-42. Now, it appears they aren’t trying to give up their top spot anytime soon, via Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of the Athletic.
“The Tampa Bay Rays, sitting on the best record in the AL even after losing four straight to the Boston Red Sox out of the break, give every indication that they will be aggressive at the deadline,” Sammon and Rosenthal wrote.

“I think the big surprise will be Tampa buying big,” a rival executive added. “They’re everywhere scouting.”
“In any case, the Rays want to add pitching, as well as an impact hitter to complement Junior Caminero, Yandy Díaz and Jonathan Aranda,” the insiders continued. “That hitter could play any number of positions — catcher, second base, outfield. And the Rays will not necessarily add just one.”
Entering Wednesday’s games, the Rays rank 14th in MLB with 454 runs scored. Another big bat may be necessary to get them over the hump. Furthermore, Tampa Bay sits ninth in the team ERA with a 3.86 ERA. Adding to their rotation or bullpen would only make the franchise an even scarier threat.
The Rays have missed the playoffs the last two seasons. They now believe they’re in a position to go on a deep playoff run. Don’t be surprised if Tampa Bay bolsters those chances with a massive trade deadline.
