New York Yankees infielder Jose Caballero may cause MLB to change its rules soon. Caballero has been implementing tactics to disrupt pitchers’ timings with the pitch clock. Jimmy O’Brien, or as many of you know him, Jomboy shared an insightful breakdown of Caballero’s tactics at the plate.
Batters need to be ready to hit by the time the pitch clock reaches eight seconds. After eight seconds, the pitcher can prepare to throw the baseball at any time. However, they need to wait until that eight-second mark. Caballero has been waiting until the final second he can before looking up at the pitcher and preparing to hit.
It leads to pitcher pitch clock violations quite often. If the pitcher comes set before the eight-second mark and before Caballero is engaging with him, a pitch clock violation can be called.
Caballero’s tactics often frustrate opponents. However, they even frustrate members of the media, as MLB insider Jon Heyman called out the infielder in a recent post on X, formerly Twitter.
“Enough with José Caballero’s stall tactics. He found a tiny loophole in rule, so good for him. But for what? To annoy opposing pitchers and get a pitch clock violation once a month? Guess what, it’s annoying many more than the pitcher now.”
The Yankees and Pittsburgh Pirates benches even recently cleared after frustration boiled over following Caballero’s tactics at the plate.
It will be interesting to see if MLB does end up changing the rule given the way Caballero approaches it. The pitch clock is still rather new overall, so the league is surely open to ways of improving the system.
