When fans think about the Pittsburgh Steelers’ biggest X-factor entering the 2026 season, names like Aaron Rodgers, star pass rushers TJ Watt and Cam Heyward, or high-profile offseason additions like Michael Pittman Jr. naturally come to mind.
However, the player who could have the biggest impact on whether Pittsburgh becomes a legitimate AFC contender isn’t one of the team’s biggest stars.
It’s center Zach Frazier.

Offensive linemen rarely receive national attention unless something goes wrong, but Frazier has quietly developed into one of the NFL’s premier young interior linemen. Entering his third season, the former second-round pick out of West Virginia looks poised for a breakout campaign that could elevate the Steelers’ offense to another level.
ESPN analyst Ben Solak certainly believes Frazier is on that path.
“Film heads love Frazier, who might simply be the best offensive lineman still on a rookie contract. NFL Next Gen Stats had Frazier with a 2.7% QB pressure rate surrendered last season — the single best mark of any offensive lineman with at least 300 snaps. Centers certainly get more double-team help than tackles, but Frazier was fifth in one-on-one rate behind some predictable stars such as Tyler Linderbaum and Aaron Brewer. The Steelers trust him on islands the way teams with highly paid star centers do. Of all the players on this list, Frazier would be my bet to eventually become the best player at his position in the NFL.”
That’s incredibly high praise.
Calling someone the future best center in football isn’t something analysts throw around lightly, especially when players like Tyler Linderbaum, Creed Humphrey, and several established veterans still occupy the position. Yet the numbers support Solak’s evaluation.
Allowing pressure on just 2.7 percent of pass-blocking snaps is remarkable. For a young center still playing on his rookie contract, it’s a sign that Pittsburgh may already have one of the league’s foundational offensive linemen. The timing couldn’t be better.
The Steelers’ offensive line has steadily improved over the past two seasons and now projects as a top-15 unit entering 2026, with top-10 upside if everything comes together. That improvement starts in the middle, where Frazier’s communication, intelligence, and consistency set the tone for everyone around him.
Great centers do far more than snap the football. They’re responsible for identifying defensive fronts, adjusting blocking assignments before the snap, and serving as the quarterback’s second set of eyes against complex blitz packages. When a center performs at an elite level, the entire offense tends to operate more efficiently.
That’s exactly why Frazier has become so valuable.
If he takes another step forward, Pittsburgh’s offensive line could transform from solid to one of the better units in the AFC. That would create cleaner pockets for Rodgers, open more rushing lanes, and allow the Steelers to fully capitalize on their offensive talent.
It’s easy to overlook how much one interior lineman can influence a season, but championship teams are often built from the inside out. Just look around the league. After such an impressive 2025 season, opposing defenses will undoubtedly spend more time studying Frazier’s tendencies. The challenge now becomes proving last season wasn’t the exception but the beginning of something even greater. If he answers that challenge, the Steelers may finally have one of the league’s elite centers for years to come.
Frazier may not sell jerseys or generate many headlines, but his impact could ultimately determine just how far Pittsburgh goes in 2026. If the former Mountaineer continues his rapid ascent and develops into the dominant force many believe he can become, the Steelers’ offensive line could evolve from a strength into one of the team’s biggest competitive advantages.
