Speaker of the House Mike Johnson has worn a pained expression on his face for years now—it’s kind of his trademark. But recent events are threatening to make it permanent.
The guy’s dealing with a potential majority loss in both his realm of the House as well as the Senate, and his party’s inability to shift with the times is leaving him and his fellow Tr*mp worshippers in the dust.
At the recent Christian Family Leadership Summit, the only event where a Johnson headliner can draw crowds, the congressman’s composure slipped a bit more than usual when he mentioned that he had to come up with $400 million by the end of the year. Johnson’s stress was palpable, and we all know why.

Let’s start with the obvious stuff…
Recent polling confirms that while it’s not a done deal, Democrats are likely to take back control after the midterms. The loss of Lindsey Graham and Mitch McConnell meant an already wobbly majority in the Senate, and Republicans are already breaking rank to keep certain aspects of Tr*mp’s agenda from going through.
Last week, Senator Tom Tillis used his vote to block Todd Blanche’s AG nomination until Blanche met with Epstein victims. Since Thomas Massie, Bill Cassidy, and other Republicans started defying Tr*mp over the Epstein cover up, it’s clear the GOP had on both branches is waning.
But it gets even worse for Johnson.
Remember how Tennessee Rep. Andy Ogles started out Pride Month with a violently anti-LGBTQ+ tweet that tried to repackage gay pride as “Nuclear Family Month?” Ogles quickly deleted the tweet, and Mike Johnson was quick to distance himself from the anti-gay and Islamophobic rhetoric. But not quick enough: perhaps because of his bigoted stance, incumbent Ogles is facing serious heat from his challenger, Tennessee Agricultural Commissioner Charlie Hatcher. In May, Ogles stood at a 95% chance of winning the nomination. Now, his chances have dropped to around 65%.
That’s quite a steep decline.
While Tr*mp endorsed Ogles, Tennessee’s former governor just publicly endorsed Hatcher, a candidate far less likely to bend to Tr*mp’s whims if elected. No wonder Johnson is stressed!
And as if that weren’t enough of a reason to take a sick day, the cyclosporiasis takeover continues to destroy Tr*mp’s good standing with his few remaining fans, one gastrointestinal event at a time. In a normal moment, there would be no reason to blame the government for a health crisis caused by germ-ridden lettuce. But RFK Jr. was directly responsible for ending CDC parasite prevention tracking.
Even worse is the fact that Taylor Farms, the distributor to whom the outbreak was originally traced, donated $1 million to a MAGA Pac last year. Representatives from the company even scheduled a sneaky White House visit last week, the day before the FDA officially took back their claim that Taylor Farms was the cyclospora outbreak’s Patient Zero.
Tr*mp, naturally, denies these connections. But tell that to the roiling stomachs of over 7,000 Americans in 30 states and counting. So far, the disease has sent 100 people to the hospital with serious symptoms.
None of it looks very good for Johnson or his short-lived GOP domination agenda, and it’s only going to get poopier from here on out. If we were to give Johnson one piece of advice, it would be to never find himself stranded in a location without an accessible toilet in the coming months.
