John Cena has finally opened up about why his memorable heel turn during his WWE retirement tour came to an early end.
Speaking alongside WWE Chief Content Officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque on WWE: Unreal Season 3, Cena explained the creative thinking behind the character. Moreover, he revealed why WWE ultimately decided to change course.
Their candid discussion offers a rare look at how both men realized the storyline needed a different direction before it reached its conclusion.

Cena recalled embracing the challenge of turning villain for the first time in 23 years after Elimination Chamber 2025. He famously aligned with The Rock and Travis Scott as part of his feud with Cody Rhodes.
“You can ask me about any moment on the tour and I can guarantee I can give you a ‘why’ for every single one,” Cena said. “We’re doing this monumental switch… ‘Ok, that works. Let’s go!'”
He explained that his goal was to “ruin wrestling” by making fans lose interest in his matches rather than simply booing him.
“I have to formulate a why. Why after 23 years am I doing this?… That means to win the WWE championship, with methodical, catastrophically boring work.”
Cena admitted he intentionally wanted fans to leave disappointed after one of his title defenses.
“People were like ‘that’s it? What a sh**ty main event.’ Yup - that’s what I was going for! Watch the next one.”
However, WWE eventually concluded the idea had crossed the line. Cena revealed he was told, “That was too boring. Like, that was too bad. I think people are going to stop coming!” He added that the message from WWE was, “this isn’t heat on you, this is heat on the company.”
Triple H agreed that Cena’s instincts initially made sense but felt the concept had reached its limit.
“There was a certain point in time where I was like, ‘this ain’t working!’ You still got to deliver for these people… you’ve got to give them your greatness still.”
Cena said he accepted the adjustment. Moreover, he credited both Triple H and the audience for steering the character back on track before SummerSlam.
“Cody at SummerSlam was supposed to be him beating virtue into me - but the fans beat him to it! ‘We want John back’ - no problem… Hunter telling me I was swinging too big… and the audience is the show.”
The heel run may not have lasted as long as originally envisioned. Nevertheless, Cena said it allowed him to “swim in uncomfortable waters.” In the end, WWE pivoted before the storyline could be counted out, proving that even the best game plans sometimes need a mid-match adjustment.
