Fans are celebrating the first full trailer for Avengers: Doomsday as it racked up over 500 million views within 24 hours of release.
Doomsday, the first in a two-part Avengers finale, reunites established Marvel Cinematic Universe heroes with X-Men characters while introducing Robert Downey Jr as Doctor Doom after almost a decade playing Iron Man.
Chris Evans returns as Steve Rogers alongside Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, Patrick Stewart’s Professor X, Letitia Wright’s Black Panther, Channing Tatum’s Gambit, Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man, and a wider ensemble cast that includes Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Florence Pugh, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Joseph Quinn, and Simu Liu.
The trailer, released on Tuesday, amassed 503 million views within 24 hours, according to Variety. This made it the second biggest movie trailer launch in history, behind only Sony’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which recorded 719 million views over the same period. It was also the most-viewed trailer in the studio’s history, crossing the Deadpool & Wolverine Super Bowl teaser, which drew 365 million views, according to Disney.
The trailer sees Thor announce: “Something’s coming. Something we may not be able to deter. Before this day is done, we shall be faced with an unthinkable decision.”
“If you return, you will return as brothers and sisters,” he continues. “But mark my words, we are going to need a miracle.”
Fans sounded largely excited about the film after watching the trailer. Many praised the return of legacy characters and Doctor Doom’s debut, although some criticised it as relying too heavily on nostalgia.
“Oh my god. Doctor Doom just stopped Thor Stormbreaker with two fingers. Marvel fans, we’re so back,” one fan wrote on X.
“This trailer means everything to me. Everything. Avengers: Doomsday will be the MCU’s greatest peak.”
“The worst person you know is gonna try and convince you they aren’t excited about this,” a fan said.
“‘I wasn't moved’. You will still move to the cinema on the 18th,” another joked.
“Avengers Doomsday has a very dark tone and that is perfect! Loved everything about that trailer,” commented another. “Doom, let’s goooo.”
A number of fans were particularly excited by Thor’s reunion with Steve Rogers.
“I love that Thor had to confirm that was actually Steve by giving him Mjölnir,” one of them remarked.
Rogers’s story had appeared to come to an end with 2019’s Endgame, in which the superhero decided to travel back into the past and be with Peggy Carter and passed on his Captain America shield to Sam Wilson.
Not everyone appeared impressed, though. “This is genuinely nostalgia bait,” one fan argued. “There really is no story except aura farming and mostly disregarding female characters!”
“It is insane that this trailer doesn't get obliterated on the spot,” another complained, “there is not a single clever shot idea, no standout set or character except Doom, no artistic direction or visual flair, just absolute emptiness. I’m really bracing myself for some catastrophic fan service slop.”
Over on Reddit, many fans said they weren’t bothered about the “nostalgia bait” criticism. “So f****** pumped. Feel like Doomsday could’ve been more epic, but I bet they have so much under their sleeve that they’re not trying to give away yet it’s hard,” one user wrote.
Another was full of praise for Downey Jr’s return. “It's like people forgot that RDJ is an actual, serious, versatile, Oscar-calibre actor and not just Tony Stark.”
“I forgot that feeling of watching these trailers. The other movies have been good, but there’s something about an Avengers trailer that really gets the energy going,” another fan remarked.
Marvel’s synopsis for the film says “beloved heroes from three distinct universes will be set on a deadly collision course and ultimately face an existential threat unlike anything they've ever encountered”.
“This epic film will lay the foundation for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”
Doomsday releases in cinemas on 18 December 2026.
