The Seattle Mariners may not be playing up to their expectations, but they are still leading the American League West standings as of this story’s writing despite their mediocre 51-50 record. The Mariners are set to buy before the MLB trade deadline, and San Diego Padres closer Mason Miller may be an option for them. Miller has emerged as a trade candidate and would provide the Mariners’ bullpen with a crucial boost.
Miller, 27, is arguably the best closer in all of MLB right now. The flame-throwing right-hander has turned in a stellar 0.89 ERA to go along with a league leading 25 saves this season. The Padres may be underperforming, but Miller has continued to dominate opponents.
If Miller is indeed made available for a potential trade — which many rumors and reports are suggesting is likely to occur — no shortage of teams will be linked to Miller. Seattle certainly makes sense as a landing destination for him.

Mariners closer Andres Munoz has had an up and down season. He’s pitched to a 3.96 ERA while saving 17 games. Bringing in Miller would give the Mariners an especially reliable closer. Meanwhile, Munoz could still find success in an 8th inning role.
Closing out ball games is of the utmost importance, so going all in on a Miller trade would make sense. Acquiring him would not be cheap, though. The reliever is under team control through the 2029 season. So, what would a Mariners-Padres Miller trade look like?

Padres acquire: 2B Cole Young, OF Lazaro Montes, RHP Griffin Hugus
Young, the Mariners second baseman, was previously a highly regarded prospect. Meanwhile, Montes is the team’s No. 3 overall prospect and Hugus is the team’s No. 10 overall prospect, according to MLB.com. The reality of the situation is that San Diego likely isn’t going to enter a complete rebuild, so adding a current MLB player to this trade could give the Mariners an advantage over other Miller trade suitors.
The Mariners have other infielders who can help fill the void at second base until Brendan Donovan returns from injury. With Colt Emerson at shortstop and JP Crawford at third base, the infield should remain in a respectable position even if Young is included in the deal.
Additionally, the Padres received a potential future star outfielder in Montes and a right-handed pitcher in Hugus who could make an impact at the MLB level in the future. Hugus, 22, is probably still a few years away from reaching the big leagues, but Montes’ MLB ETA is set for 2027.
The Padres need offense, so bringing in an infielder with a high ceiling who can impact the team this season and an outfielder who also features potential and can help the ball club next year should intrigue them.
As for Miller’s fit with the Mariners, he would instantly lead a bullpen that does feature a number of quality arms. Seattle still has enough offense to perform well and this trade would not completely decimate their farm system.
Mariners fans may be hesitant to support moving Young as part of the deal, while Padres fans may want more in a Miller trade. Overall, though, this specific trade would help both the Padres and Mariners meet their goals. San Diego would avoid entering a long-term rebuild and Seattle would improve its current MLB roster.
