The San Francisco Giants are clear sellers as the Aug. 3 MLB trade deadline approaches. However, an unexpected duo could be their best trade pieces.
According to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, outfielder Heliot Ramos and utility man Casey Schmitt are generating interest on the trade market. Slusser further mentioned that the Phillies and Mariners had representatives watching as the Giants took on the Royals Monday night.
Although Ramos has been unable to replicate his All-Star showing in 2024, he has put together a solid .276/.310/.469 batting line with nine homers and 13 doubles in his 252 plate appearances entering Tuesday. Schmitt, meanwhile, has posted a career-best .275/.304/.482 batting line with 19 homers and 17 doubles in his 388 plate appearances.
The Giants could achieve two goals by trading Heliot Ramos and Casey Schmitt
The Giants can afford to wait for the right offer for Ramos and/or Schmitt. Both players have three years of team control remaining and are about to enter arbitration for the first time.
That team control and relatively inexpensive contract could help the Giants even more on the trade front. The Giants are reportedly looking to move on from contracts given to shortstop Willy Adames, first baseman Rafael Devers, third baseman Matt Chapman and outfielder Jung Hoo Lee. While Lee has rebuilt his value, the cost to acquire either Ramos or Schmitt could include taking on one of those contracts.
Either path could be a difficult one for president of baseball operations Buster Posey and general manager Zack Minasian. Ramos and Schmitt are valuable pieces who could bring back a solid bounty of prospects. Attaching one of those contracts to any deal would limit the return, but would provide more financial flexibility moving forward.
