Wizards of the Coast has revealed all the welcome decks that will appear in Magic: The Gathering's Star Trek set. They gave a preview of the decks during their first look presentation of the set on WeeklyMTG. Welcome decks are beginner-friendly products designed to help new players learn how to play MTG.
The MTG Star Trek set will introduce five welcome decks, with one deck for each color of MTG. So far, only the mythic rare and rare cards from each deck have been revealed. Here's everything we know about the Star Trek welcome decks.
The White welcome deck features Picard, Steadfast Captain as its mythic rare. He lets you put two +1/+1 counters on another target creature you control when he enters or attacks.
Operations Officer is the rare card that was showcased. It draws you a card when it enters and gets +1/+1 counters when it attacks.
Based on these two cards, the White welcome deck will likely be an aggressive deck themed around +1/+1 counters.
Spock, Logical Choice is the mythic rare of the Blue welcome deck. He has vigilance and can be tapped to draw a card.
The rare card that was showcased is Trelane, Squire of Gothos. He has vigilance, ward 2, and can't be blocked.
Based on the two cards that were showcased, this deck will likely be themed around vigilant creatures and card draw.
The Black welcome deck features Borg Queen, Perfection Manifest as its mythic rare. She's an artifact creature that gives all artifact creatures you control +2/+0. Additionally, the Borg Queen features the set's new Assimilate mechanic. When she enters, she lets you assimilate a target creature card in an opponent's graveyard. This lets you recur it under your control with a +1/+1 counter and turns it into a Borg artifact creature.
Bio-Asset Allocator is the rare card that was showcased. Its ability gives your artifact creatures a drain ability that triggers when they attack.
Based on these two cards, the Black welcome deck is likely themed around artifact creatures, especially Star Trek's Borg.
Kirk, Enterprising Captain is the mythic rare of the Red welcome deck. His ability lets you exile the top card of your library when he attacks, if you meet its condition. You may play the exiled card this turn.
The rare card that was showcased is Klingon Strike Force. It's a hasty trampler that deals 2 damage to each opponent when it dies.
Based on the two cards that were showcased, this is likely an aggressive deck with a power matters subtheme.
The Green welcome deck features Benjamin Sisko, Besieged as its mythic rare. While he's on your battlefield, he makes you play with the top card of your library revealed. He also lets you play lands and cast creature spells from the top of your library.
Tenacious Tosk is the rare card that was showcased. It can't be blocked by more than one creature and gets +1/+1 counters when it deals combat damage to a player.
Based on these two cards, the Green welcome deck will likely focus heavily on creature cards.
The MTG Star Trek welcome decks are typically distributed for free during local game store events.
