The upcoming Magic: The Gathering The Hobbit set introduces two new scene boxes as part of its product lineup. Each scene box contains six borderless cards that combine to form an iconic scene from J.R.R. Tolkien's high fantasy novel. The contents of each scene box were revealed during the set's debut stream held at MagicCon Amsterdam 2026.
Here's what's inside each The Hobbit scene box.
Crack the Plates Scene Box Contents
This scene box recreates the Crack the Plates scene from The Hobbit. It introduces five legendary creatures and an artifact.
Thorin, King of Durin's Folk, is a Red and White variant of the character who stands out. His first ability creates a treasure token when he or another dwarf you control enters. He also increases the power of your other dwarves for each artifact you control making him an interesting dwarf commander.
Another interesting card for dwarf, equipment, and saga decks is Fili and Kili, Joyous. This creature can be tapped to add two red mana that can only be spent on the three aforementioned spells. Next, Ori, Plate Stacker, is another dwarf that destroys all your opponents' artifacts and enchantments when he enters.
Bilbo, Fellow Conspirator is a mono-green variant of The Hobbit's protagonist who supports Food decks. Meanwhile, Bag End Banquet is an artifact that creates food tokens and generates colorless mana for each food you control.
Finally, Gandalf, Party Guest is a Blue, Red, and White legendary creature who works with legendary wizards. He lets you cast an instant or sorcery for free if its mana value is equal to or less than twice the legendary wizards you control. However, it only triggers at the beginning of your turn's combat.
Treasures of Smaug Scene Box Contents
Treasures of Smaug recreates the scene where Bilbo infiltrates Smaug's lair to burglar the Arkenstone. This scene box introduces two new artifacts, two new sorceries, a new land, and a new creature.
Smaug, the Impenetrable, is the card that stood out to me the most. It is a Black and Red variant of Smaug that converts noncombat damage dealt to it into treasure tokens. Besides its powerful ability, it also has flying, indestructible, and haste, making it a potent combat threat.
Besides Smaug, the other scene cards would also make powerful includes in a commander deck's 99. Dragon-Cursed Halls is a new land that can make a creature generate treasure when dealing combat damage to a player. Next, Equipment decks will appreciate Long-lost Lances, which gives your equipped creatures first strike and vigilance during your turn.
Among the sorceries, Bilbo's Burglaring is a blue sorcery that lets you steal an artifact from each opponent. Meanwhile, Dragon's Desire is a red sorcery that generates red mana for each artifact your opponents control. Finally, Necklace of Girion is a green artifact that adds green mana. It also puts +1/+1 counters on creatures whenever you cast green spells or have a Forest enter under your control.
Additional Scene Box Contents
Besides the included scene cards, each The Hobbit scene box also comes with three The Hobbit Play Boosters. Both boxes also come with an easel stand to display the full scenes.
Magic: The Gathering's The Hobbit set is scheduled for release on August 14, 2026. The set's prerelease events will be held from August 7 to 13.
