Magic: The Gathering is no stranger to collaborations with massive franchises, but its upcoming partnership with Star Trek is shaping up to be one of its most exciting yet. After being announced nearly a year ago, MTG is helping celebrate Star Trek's 60th anniversary with a full-blown collaboration set themed after the long-running sci-fi series, with more than a few unique card styles, mechanics, and offerings for fans of both franchises.
Building on some of the foundations introduced in previous sets, some content in the Star Trek x MTG set will be familiar to fans already, but there's still plenty of new surprises in store to make the upcoming release stand out against previous editions.
Magic: The Gathering — Star Trek Release Date
While the set won't line up exactly alongside the series' 60th anniversary, you'll be able to start getting your hands on individual Star Trek-themed MTG cards during the pre-release event, which is slated to run between November 6–12 at local game stores.
Following the pre-release window, MTG X Star Trek will fully release on November 13 through both online retailers and local game store, where you'll be able to purchase all available sealed products and individual cards for the set where available.
As per usual, digital players on MTG Arena will also get access to the full set several days earlier than its tabletop counterpart, as the virtual cards will go live on November 10 for players to enjoy. Leading up to its release, MTG has several events planned as part of its 2026 release schedule for fans to look forward to, as more card spoilers and set details are planned to be teased over the next few months.

In terms of what sealed products you can expect to get from the MTG X Star Trek collaboration, the release is a fully-fledged set similar to what you would expect from an in-universe set or the first Lord of the Rings collaboration, which includes a wide array of virtually all product types. From Commander decks, Scene Boxes, event kits, and more, the following products are all available for pre-order right now, with MSRP listed in USD:

While the actual prices will vary depending on your retailer and each item's availability, the Commander decks themselves will likely be sold individually at differing price points depending on their value and desirability. In addition to the listed products above, you'll also be able to purchase pre-release kits from card stores in your area in preparation for the pre-release play window, which can often be purchased separately for your own unboxing as well.
Having the advantage of being a full set release, MTG is offering an assortment of products for varying levels of fans, with Collector's Edition Commander Decks and Collector Boosters for diehard fans, while also including a Beginner Box to help Star Trek fans familiarize themselves with MTG's rules and card types.
Magic: The Gathering — Star Trek Set & Card Details
Having to condense over 60 years of storytelling into a single product line, similar to the previous Marvel X MTG set, Wizards of the Coast has a plethora of flavorful card types. These will be somewhat familiar to MTG players, but they still have some of their own unique flair to make them stand out.
One of the most notable offerings from the set as a whole comes in the form of the 7 limited-edition signed character cards, which have been individually hand-signed by the actors who played the characters in the Star Trek TV show. These cards can be found in Collector Booster Packs, and have 250 printings of each card, which is sure to make them a highly sought-after collector's item on release.
So far, the hand-signed cards include Captain James T. Kirk and Kathryn Janeway, with the remaining 5 being announced at a later date.
Another unique card type being brought over is Stardate cards, which, similar to MTG's wide array of Secret Lairs. These offer 30 reprints of powerful cards from MTG's roster that have been rebranded to fit the Star Trek theme and feature art of iconic moments from the series' history.
There are also several unique borderless and full-art cards to collect in MTG's Star Trek collaboration. The first are LCAR frame cards that can offer alternative versions of creatures or full-art lands that incorporate the same font the series' Starfleet interface uses in the game, with 10 shock lands and 29 character frames to collect in total.
The Beam Me Up Bundle includes several exclusive promo cards, each of which includes 2 randomly selected variants from the 8-card set.
Lastly, you can also obtain Classic Enterprise variations of new cards in the set themed after the painted style of vintage Star Trek posters, which include 24 to collect, both in normal and foil variants, from Collector Boosters. These aren't the only bonuses you'll find as well, as Star Trek's MTG set includes 25 scene cards that you can pull without buying the standalone boxes.
Magic: The Gathering — Star Trek Set Legality & Mechanics
If you're wondering which official games you'll be able to participate in with your Star Trek-themed MTG cards, any that have been stamped with the TRK symbol will be legal in all formats upon release. The other two TRC and SDS expansion symbols will be limited to Commander, Legacy, and Vintage, unless the individual card already exists within other formats and has just been reprinted for the set, like with the Stardate cards.
Of course, with a massive new franchise like Star Trek coming to MTG for the first time, one of the most exciting things to look forward to is the several new mechanics coming to the game. In addition to the brand new gameplay mechanics, Spacecrafts and Stations are both making their reappearance after being introduced in Edge of Eternities, which has laid some excellent foundations for Star Trek to build on with the following abilities:
- Assimilate: gives you control of a creature or puts a creature card onto the battlefield under your control, after which it receives a +1/+1 counter, becomes a Borg artifact creature, and loses its other creature types.
- Face a Dilemma: Activates a unique ability of this card whenever you choose one or more modes (choices) for a spell or ability
- Federation: Group abilities that care about creature types among non-Borg creatures a player controls.
- Spacecraft & Stations: Each Spacecraft starts as an artifact and can gain other abilities when you add charge counters to it with a station, and potentially become a creature in some cases
With the new mechanics fitting in perfectly with the setting of Star Trek and the spoilers we've already seen for the set so far, the upcoming collaboration is easily one of the most exciting Magic: The Gathering sets we've seen in some time, which is worth keeping an eye on as we get closer to release and more cards are revealed.
