Los Angeles Sparks guard Kelsey Plum was the best scorer and, arguably, all-around offensive engine in the WNBA for the first month of the 2026 season, and then she was derailed by injury.
Plum sprained her ankle in practice in late May, which sidelined her for a week. After returning for six games — dropping a career-high 43 points in a win over Phoenix on June 13 — the two-time WNBA champion suffered a lower leg injury.
“Sparks guard Kelsey Plum is out with a lower left leg injury and will be re-evaluated in four weeks,” the Sparks announced in a press release on June 24.
About a month later, Plum is still hampered enough to miss the 2026 WNBA All-Star Game in Chicago this Saturday, July 25. Phoenix Mercury guard-forward Kahleah Copper was named as Plum’s replacement.
“Being named an All-Star is a true honor,” Plum wrote on her Instagram Story. “I’ve been working to return to play elite basketball on the court and I’m close to being ready to go, however I think it’s best to give my spot to an athlete who’s going to play. I’m super excited for my friend [Copper]. She’s so deserving and I’m so happy she’s going to be celebrated as she has earned this honor.”
It was Plum’s fifth straight All-Star selection and is now Copper’s fifth All-Star selection.
The Sparks have been dismal without Plum. Since June 24, the Sparks are 2-8, including an active five-game losing streak. Plum still leads the team in scoring (23.9 points per game) and assists (6.4 per game).
