Julie Chen Moonves is “open to everything and anything” in terms of future Big Brother twists, even if she’s not sure which ones will come to fruition.
During the premiere episode of Big Brother 28 earlier this month, the longtime host joked with the women entering the BB house that they were part of the show’s first “all-women” season. While that wasn’t the case this summer, Chen Moonves, 56, still wants fans to “expect the unexpected” for future iterations of the reality competition series.
“Yes and no. Probably not,” she tells PEOPLE of the possibility of a women-only Big Brother season.
“And I’ll tell you, I was surprised [producers] kept that in the edit because that’s the one episode I’m on where I’m not live. I thought it’d just be funny,” she adds. “And then when they kept it in, I was like, ‘I used to try and push for that.’ ”
After over 26 years on air, a history-making cast is something Chen-Moonves can still appreciate. “Who’s going to win, a male or a female? Are we going to make history with the first Black winner [like Big Brother 23’s Xavier Prather]? How many years in a row is a woman going to win?” she asks, rhetorically.
Chen Moonves adds, “And I do like the fact that we’ve had more marriages than The Bachelor. Now, if we did an [all-women] season, people will have the first gay wedding [in Big Brother], two women get married as a result, who knows? I’m open to everything and anything as long as people love one another. So expect the unexpected, maybe.”

Ten women have won the mainline U.S. Big Brother series since its inception in 2000. Lisa Donahue was the first, coming out on top in Big Brother 3, followed by Jun Song (Big Brother 4), Maggie Ausburn (Big Brother 6), Jordan Lloyd (Big Brother 11), Rachel Reilly (Big Brother 13), Nicole Franzel (Big Brother 18), Kaycee Clark (Big Brother 20), Taylor Hale (Big Brother 24), Chelsie Baham (Big Brother 26) and Ashley Hollis (Big Brother 27).
Big Brother is, of course, known for its twists. In one of this season’s most exciting, CBS welcomed back series favorite Angela Murray, who previously competed on Big Brother 26, as well as first-time BB houseguests and Survivor stars Dee Valladares and Rick Devens. Chen Moonves is down to see Valladares, 29, make some history of her own.
“I’ll be honest, I wasn’t pulling for her in the beginning because I’m a purist and bringing back two Survivor [stars], I was a little bit protective of the Big Brother brand,” she tells PEOPLE. “Yes, we had Cirie [Fields] in the past, but the season Cirie came on, she was secretly playing with her son. And that is very germane to what Big Brother’s about, those twists.”
“She never played Big Brother, but she got it right away,” she adds. “Not only did she win the first HOH because she’s a fierce competitor ... but the fact she took meetings and understood quickly. And then when Rick Devens told her, ‘Oh, I told so-and-so about the secret,’ I saw her brain just going, ‘Why did you do that?’ Oh, no, no, no. I thought, ‘Girl, I’m going to root for you now.’ Make history. Be the first person to win both iconic shows, and you got to cut Rick Devens loose, honey.”
Big Brother airs Sundays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET on CBS, with Big Brother: Unlocked arriving on Fridays at 8 p.m. Episodes are available to watch the next day on Paramount+.
