Good Morning America has knocked Today off its perch, and insiders say the shift inside Studio 1A goes far beyond the ratings chart.

According to the latest Nielsen ratings, Good Morning America averaged 2.809 million viewers, edging out Today‘s 2.785 million, a gap of just 24,000 viewers, per the report from Rob Shuter‘s Naughty But Nice Substack, published on Tuesday, July 21. The win snapped Today‘s 24-week streak atop the total viewers race, though Today still leads the key Adults 25-54 demographic, according to the outlet.

The bigger story, per the report, is what’s happening behind the scenes as Savannah Guthrie works through what the outlet describes as a “deeply personal family crisis.”

As In Touch previously reported, Guthrie, 54, and her family have been living through an ongoing ordeal since her 84-year-old mother Nancy disappeared on February 1 in what investigators believe was an abduction. The case remains unsolved.

“Everyone knows the Savannah situation has changed the show,” an NBC insider told Naughty But Nice. “Nobody blames Savannah, but the atmosphere is much heavier now. Morning television is supposed to make people feel better before they start their day — not leave them emotionally exhausted.”

A second source described network executives as caught between compassion and competition. “They’re trapped,” that source told Shuter. “You can’t ask Savannah to act like nothing is happening, but you also can’t ignore that viewers have noticed a dramatic shift in the show’s tone.”

One name keeps coming up as a possible fix: former Today co-anchor Hoda Kotb, 61. “Hoda brings warmth, joy, and an effortless connection with viewers,” a network insider told Shuter, “but bringing her back, even temporarily, would send a dangerous message. Savannah would almost certainly see it as a vote of no confidence, and that could ignite a full-blown backstage war.”

For now, per the report, NBC brass are holding still. “Nobody has a clean solution,” another insider said. “They want to stand by Savannah, stop GMA‘s momentum, and avoid creating an even bigger crisis behind the scenes. Right now, NBC is walking a tightrope — and everyone knows one wrong move could make things much worse.”
