Recently, the Atlanta Hawks made a big move when they acquired Oklahoma City Thunder wing Lu Dort in a three-team trade that sent Zaccharie Risacher to the Dallas Mavericks. The move gives the Hawks another elite wing defender to add to their rotation, a position they already bolstered this offseason by adding Aaron Wiggins, also in a deal with the Thunder.
Now, Michael Scotto of Hoopshype has revealed what Atlanta’s plans are regarding Dort over the long haul.
“While Dort is on an expiring $17.22 million contract, the Hawks want to keep the Canadian swingman beyond this upcoming season, league sources told HoopsHype,” reported Scotto.

Scotto also reported that the Los Angeles Lakers, Brooklyn Nets, Toronto Raptors, and Miami Heat had all been in talks to trade for Dort before he was ultimately dealt to Atlanta.
While the Hawks haven’t made any blockbuster moves this offseason the way some of their counterparts in the Eastern Conference have, they have made some savvy additions on the margins while still maintaining their future flexibility, the Dort trade being among them. As previously mentioned, the Hawks also snagged Wiggins at the Thunder’s cost-cutting fire sale, and re-signed veteran guard CJ McCollum to a team-friendly deal in free agency.
That, combined with the selection of Kingston Flemings with the number eight overall pick in last month’s NBA Draft, has made this a successful offseason in the eyes of many pundits for Atlanta, even if some might still feel they lack the true number one option necessary to compete at the highest level.
In any case, the Hawks’ schedule for the upcoming season is slated to be released at some point next month.
