You thought the Peter Hook and New Order dispute or even the latest round of Morrissey vs. Marr was going to suck all the drama out of Britain’s over-60 rocker community? John Lydon, a.k.a. Johnny Rotten, has made his feelings clear about the Sex Pistols reuniting without him and recruiting a new lead singer to tour: It’s a load of shite. “I’ll never forgive them for the way that they piled that court case on me while my wife was dying of Alzheimer’s,” he told Rolling Stone. “It was a most unfortunate act on their part, and then using Disney to strip-mine me.” The Disney of it all refers to Lydon losing a 2021 lawsuit to his bandmates, guitarist Steve Jones and drummer Paul Cook, over the Sex Pistols’ music rights for the tepidly received miniseries Pistol. “If I didn’t raise, say, $10 million after the first week, the case couldn’t go on. That’s money I could have spent taking care of my lovely Nora,” added Lydon, referring to his wife. “They knew she was ill.” Nora Forster died in 2023; the couple had been married for over four decades. Lydon said none of his former bandmates reached out to him after her death. “It’s in the minus infinities,” he said about current reunion chances. “The dirt that they unloaded on me in a time where I was in real serious grief … No, I cannot forget about that.”
,Lydon insists he is at a point in his life where he’s not looking for revenge and has zero interest in performing Sex Pistols music — the 50th anniversary of Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols is soon approaching — with another band. “I don’t have spite in me,” he said. “My God, it’d be nice to think that they were angry and furious at my wonderful solo adventures, but that would be it. No, if they’d gone about this another way and were open and friendly with me, who knows what gifts that may have brought, but they decided skullduggery was the order of the day.” Fans attending Riot Fest in Chicago will have an ultimatum to make come September: Both Lydon’s Public Image Ltd and the new Sex Pistols, which features Jones, Cook, bassist Glen Matlock, and newbie Frank Carter on lead vocals, are sharing the bill. So, there is some future in England’s dreaming.
