The Firm introduced themselves to the public not only as an all-star band but also as a group capable of creating a rock anthem through "Radioactive."
Named by BBC Music Magazine as one of the "greatest supergroups" of all time, the four-piece band brought together musicians from Led Zeppelin, Bad Company and more, delivering a song that would become the band's biggest hit.
Released in 1985 as part of the British rock group's self-titled debut, The Firm featured Paul Rodgers on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Jimmy Page on lead guitar, Tony Franklin on bass and keyboards and Chris Slade on drums. The band cracked the Billboard charts following the success of their first single.
The song entered the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 86 before climbing to a peak of No. 28, where it held the spot for two consecutive weeks.
Beyond its success on the Billboard Hot 100, "Radioactive" topped the Mainstream Rock chart, becoming The Firm's biggest commercial release.
Written by Rodgers, the singer jokingly described the creation of the song as "a five-minute write," hinting that the spontaneous burst of creativity made it easier for him to write and produce.
The iconic vocalist also mentioned that Page supported the process after liking the demo.
“So we decided to record it,” he said, as mentioned byUltimate Classic Rock. “A lot of people are surprised to find that I actually played the solo in that – it's a finger exercise. I wanted something that sounded kind of robotic, and Alexis Korner had shown me that exercise years and years ago."
In a post on Rodgers' YouTube channel, fans not only praised his powerful vocals but also celebrated "Radioactive" as a timeless classic more than 41 years after its release.
“Great song. Great musicians. Great video. Can't stop listening in 2026. Thanks, Mr. Rodgers,” one wrote.
“This song brings back the 80s for sure , the good old days,” a commenter said.
“Paul Rodgers' voice alone took this song up a few notches!” another added.
The post also prompted fans to reminisce about the memories associated with "Radioactive" and the emotions it evoked when they first heard it.
“I remember seeing this as a little kid and thinking ' that guitar player is a total rock star. I had no idea then who Free or Bad Co or Led Zeppelin were. But I knew it was cool when I saw and heard it,” a social media user said.
The same was true for another fan, who said, “I remember the first time I heard this on the radio in the car. I drove mesmerized and fell in love with that voice again!!! Great song!!”
Despite its brief two-year run as a supergroup, The Firm left a lasting mark on rock music with "Radioactive," a song that continues to be celebrated alongside the band's legacy.
