Marvel Studios boasts the next major event in sci-fi cinema now that Michael Waldron has been announced to be penning a Nova movie for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In recent years, audiences have witnessed the massive expansion of the sci-fi movie genre, with improvements in visual effects and narratives becoming smarter. The likes of Arrival, Project Hail Mary, Everything Everywhere All at Once, Dune, and more have stunned viewers, but Marvel has also been at the forefront of this movement.

Nova Will Be the MCU's Next Most Powerful Cosmic Superhero
On July 13, 2026, Deadline reported that Michael Waldron is penning the script and is even expected to direct a Nova movie for the MCU. Waldron was previously the showrunner of Loki and a writer on 2022's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, so he is no stranger to some of Marvel's weirder and wilder stories. This makes Nova the perfect project for Waldron to take on next, finally introducing one of the most powerful cosmic heroes to the MCU after years of disappointing updates.
Marvel Studios was previously developing the adventures of Richard Rider's Nova into a TV series with Sabir Pirzada (Moon Knight, Ms. Marvel) penning the script, but the idea was shelved in 2025. The fact that these plans have been resurrected in the form of a new MCU movie is very exciting. The human Richard Rider, first introduced to Marvel Comics in 1976's The Man Called Nova #1, was selected by the last surviving member of the Nova Corps to inherit his armor and powers.
Rhomann Dey—the Nova Corpsman played by John C. Reilly in the MCU—passed his Nova Centurion costume and powers to Richard Rider after the fall of Xandar in a long-running war against the Skrulls. Among Nova's powers are superhuman strength, speed, and agility, a regenerative healing factor, energy manipulation, and a connection to the Xandarian Worldmind and access to the Nova Force. Nova is widely considered more powerful than even Captain Marvel, so he could become the MCU's most formidable new hero.
Nova Can Reignite Interest in the MCU's Cosmic Realm
Nova's introduction into the MCU will open the door for the massive expansion of the franchise far beyond the boundaries of Earth, making it one of the biggest and brightest space operas coming up. Back in 2014, filmmaker James Gunn—the current co-CEO of DC Studios—brought the little-known, risky Guardians of the Galaxy team into the MCU, and the huge success of Guardians of the Galaxy urged Marvel to plan a deeper exploration of the MCU's cosmos.
At one point, James Gunn was planned to be the head of Marvel's cosmic story development, crafting new adventures involving the Guardians of the Galaxy while also setting up new space-faring characters, such as Adam Warlock (Will Poulter) and, indeed, Nova. Gunn's 2018 firing from Marvel Studios and subsequent move to DC put these plans on hold, even though we did get 2019's Captain Marvel, 2021's Eternals, and the Loki series, among others, expanding the MCU's cosmic side.
Michael Waldron's development of a Nova movie after his work on Loki and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness uniquely positions him to resurrect these plans for the MCU's cosmic stories. Waldron was also, at one time, trusted to pen the script for what was once Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, proving that Marvel and Kevin Feige have faith in him to do justice to some of the franchise's biggest stories. This cements Nova as one of the most important upcoming sci-fi movie events.
James Gunn started to lay the foundations for a Nova movie back in 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy, which heavily featured Xandar and the Nova Corps, led by Nova Prime (Glenn Close). The Guardians trusted the Nova Corps with the protection of the Power Stone, but Thanos decimated Xandar before Avengers: Infinity War to claim it for himself, leaving the fate of the Nova Corps uncertain. Gunn's set-up went nowhere, but Michael Waldron's Nova movie can finally continue his legacy.
Nova Is the Perfect Cosmic Movie to Release After Avengers: Secret Wars
You might argue that there is little need for a cosmic expansion of the MCU after Avengers: Secret Wars, given the fact that characters such as the Fantastic Four and, excitingly, the X-Men will be joining Marvel Studios' primary timeline. However, Nova is actually the perfect character to introduce alongside them, developing adventures not just on Earth but in the far reaches of space too. This will keep the MCU feeling fresh and varied, rather than one-note and stale, a necessity in this new Saga.
One thing 20th Century Fox's X-Men franchise forgot was how closely the X-Men were connected to the cosmos. The Fox movies never explored Cyclops' heritage, his father being the leader of the space-faring Starjammers, the true ancient origins of the Phoenix Force were never shown, and the Shi'ar empire was never introduced, despite having such personal ties to the X-Men, Professor X specifically. These connections mean Marvel needs to explore the cosmos as well as Earthbound stories in the MCU's future.
Not only will Michael Waldron's Nova movie pay off a decade-old storyline by hopefully addressing the destruction of Xandar, but it will also establish an essential anchor for space-based adventures in the MCU. Avengers: Secret Wars is expected to change the MCU massively, so introducing Nova in its wake will allow Marvel to build an entirely new corner of the universe and thrust a new star into the limelight. In Phase 7, Michael Waldron's Nova movie promises to be a monumental sci-fi event.
