A new report boldly predicts the Los Angeles Dodgers are going to frustrate a lot of rival teams and fans by getting even better before the Aug. 3 MLB trade deadline.
To no one’s surprise, the Dodgers head into their game on Wednesday night against the Philadelphia Phillies with the best record in baseball at 64-38. Yet, what sends a cold chill down the spines of LA’s rivals is that not only are they the defending two-time champions, but they sit atop the MLB standings and aren’t even at full strength.
Starters Tyler Glasnow and Blake Snell, and closer Edwin Diaz have all missed much of the year. It means that the best team in baseball will get some major reinforcements soon. Which makes the idea of a big trade before the deadline seem unnecessary. However, according to ESPN’s Buster Olney, LA is “hell-bent” on improving an already stacked roster before Aug. 3.
Who could the LA Dodgers target before the MLB trade deadline?
By winning a third straight World Series in October, the Dodgers would be just the third team in MLB history to achieve that feat. Joining the New York Yankees from the late 1940s and early 1950s and the Oakland Athletics of the 1970s. It is a goal that would take their branding and long-term revenue outlook to even greater heights.
So which players and positions could the Dodgers target over the next 12 days? “Adding a catcher or a reliever or a Skubal or something else” is what Olney expects LA to go after. Acquiring Tarik Skubal would seem absurd. However, they can make one of the best possible offers if they are willing to put some of their elite prospects in a trade package.
While star catchers Shea Langeliers, Hunter Goodman, and Adley Rutschman aren’t expected to be moved this season, according to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, Cincinnati Reds veteran Tyler Stephenson or former New York Mets No. 1 prospect Francisco Alvarez could be targets. The Mets also have several veteran relievers that could be on the Dodgers’ radar, like Brooks Raley and Luke Weaver.
