Cody Rhodes has revealed that he was far from certain heading into one of WWE‘s most memorable moments of 2025, telling Good Hang With Amy Poehler that he was “trepidatious” about his involvement in John Cena‘s heel turn at Elimination Chamber and that his overriding concern was not ruining the moment for a performer who had never done anything like it before.

The Elimination Chamber moment saw Cena turn heel for the first time in 22 years, with Rhodes becoming the victim of a three-on-one assault at the hands of Cena, The Rock, and Travis Scott. The angle set up their feud heading into WrestleMania 41, where Cena competed in his final WrestleMania match. Rhodes described the very different emotional states he and Cena were in going into the moment.

“With John, if you’ve ever seen it, the moment where he hugs me and his face changes, he was so excited,” Rhodes said. “I was more trepidatious in terms of he had never done that and it didn’t even make sense to do it at this point. He had never gone rogue, gone bad. So I just didn’t want to screw that massive moment up.”

Rhodes then opened up about the friendship that underpins that professional trust, tracing it back to his early years in WWE when he used to drive Cena on the road.

“He taught me everything I know because I drove him around for two years before he got his big tour bus,” Rhodes said. “John was such a fun riding partner. A lot of strict rules. He’s not gonna agree with this, but I was a ‘job guy’, I was laying on my back looking at the lights every night. I can’t think of another guy who didn’t need to take the time. He definitely didn’t need to, he was the busiest guy on the roster. He took the time.”
