A new report suggests the Houston Astros would be smart to be sellers before the Aug. 3 MLB trade deadline because they stand to get big returns for some of their players.
To the frustration of Astros fans used to consistent winning over the last decade, the team enters its game on Wednesday against the Miami Marlins with a disappointing 49-54 record. However, despite an underwhelming first half, they are just 4 games out of the final Wild Card spot in the American League and only three behind in the AL West. So you can’t blame Houston’s front office for feeling they can still reach the playoffs in 2026.
But what is the ultimate goal for the Astros? To just make the playoffs, or compete for championships? Because even if they could land a spot in the playoffs, there is no reason to believe they are going far this fall. That is why they must seriously consider being sellers before the MLB trade deadline.

In a new report from ESPN’s Buster Olney and Jeff Passan, the MLB insiders explained why this is a strong sellers’ market because so many teams are holding on to hope of reaching the postseason this year.
So if you can offer impact players at positions of high demand, that club stands to gain a lot over the next two weeks. The Astros specifically could be the biggest winners if they are willing to move certain players because there is a growing demand for impact right-handed hitters and closers.
Despite the huge long-term positive for the organization if they move some of their most valuable players, Olney claims, “so far, all the rhetoric coming out of Houston is about charging ahead.” The Astros have only a 16% chance of making the playoffs right now.
