I went hands-on with the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, and the crease has never looked better

On the surface, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra doesn’t seem like a huge upgrade this year. But when I sit back and think about everything that is new this year, this is a much larger upgrade than it seems.

After going hands-on with the new Galaxy devices ahead of Unpacked, I was walking back to our hotel with a few other journalists, talking about everything new. And there’s actually quite a bit.

Let’s start with the display. Samsung already announced the Flex Titanium display last week. And now I’ve gotten a chance to see it in person. The biggest question about this display is whether the crease is gone. It’s not gone, but it is far, far less noticeable than it used to be. I’m very impressed with this crease this time around. I actually think it’s better than the Find N6’s crease, mostly because it’s much narrower than what OPPO does with its creases. Below, you can see what the crease looks like on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra vs the Galaxy Z Fold 7.

The other big display upgrade this year is the anti-reflective layer. Samsung has finally added an anti-reflective layer to the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra (and Fold 8), which does also help to make that crease look smaller. And as you can see in this image, it does make the light less noticeable compared to the Galaxy Z Fold 7.

Samsung finally adds silicon carbon!

For years, when we’ve had briefings with Samsung, someone has always asked about silicon carbon batteries. Typically, we would get the response that it’s an unproven technology, but with the Galaxy S26 earlier this year, Samsung did confirm they were testing silicon carbon batteries. Now, just 6 months later, we see it in actual devices from Samsung.

Unfortunately, the silicon content in these batteries is very low, this is why it’s only 5,000mAh in the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. It’s so little in fact, that it’s still classified as lithium-ion. But it is a small step for Samsung.

With this new 5,000mAh battery, it feels like the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra will be able to last through a full day. Of course, we’ll have to test that out and find out for ourselves once we get our review unit later today.

Samsung also increased wired and wireless charging here. So we now have 45W wired charging and 20W wireless charging; unfortunately, there’s still no magnetic charging included. But all of Samsung’s cases do include the magnets.

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is available for $2,099, and will start shipping on August 7.
