One of the smaller updates to the Galaxy Z8 series of foldables announced at Unpacked is actually the new opening/closing mechanism. Samsung heard all of our complaints from the Galaxy Z Fold 7 about how hard it was to open and close. Basically, because of how thin it was and the sides being completely flat, it was hard to open and close. Now, Samsung has fixed that.
Essentially, Samsung beveled the edges a little bit more, making it easier to open the Galaxy Z Flip 8, Fold 8, and Fold 8 Ultra. It’s a small thing, but definitely noticeable if you used the Galaxy Z Fold 7 for any length of time.
Samsung also added stronger magnets, making it easier to close once the devices are open. I can say, after spending a couple of hours in the hands-on area ahead of Unpacked, this does definitely make a difference.
It’s these little things that really help to improve the user experience, and make upgrading worthwhile. I especially noticed this after using the Motorola Razr Fold over the past few months.
Samsung continues to focus on durability
Samsung is also continuing to focus on durability with the new Galaxy Z Flip 8, Galaxy Z Fold 8, and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. Though that’s a bit of a strange claim considering they are still IP48 rated, when many competitors are higher for water and dust resistance now.
Samsung’s foldables have always been pretty durable since the first set of foldables launched in 2019 and were immediately recalled. Of course, they aren’t perfect, and people have still had issues with their foldables over the years. But it’s far better than it used to be.
The Galaxy Z Flip 8, Galaxy Z Fold 8, and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra are all available for pre-order right now. The Galaxy Z Flip 8 starts at $1,199, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 at $1,899, and the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra at $2,099.
