As one of the most accomplished athletes in history, LeBron James has earned every right to decide how his basketball story ends. Fortunately for us, he’s already decided to play again next season, but where he’ll end up is anyone’s guess.
As more time passes without a decision, however, suspicions are rising that he may be waiting for a specific day. The next major date on the NBA calendar is August 6th, when several players, including LeBron’s former teammate Anthony Davis, are set to become free agents. It’s no secret that Davis is looking for a new extension from the Wizards, and he could try to force his way out if they won’t concede.
“If you are trying to make sense of the current radio silence across the league’s front offices, look no further than August 6,” wrote Brandon ‘Scoop B’ Robinson. “If an announcement doesn’t drop immediately, this entire standoff comes down to one fundamental question: Are the Wizards actually willing to put their money where their mouth is and hand AD the max? If the Wizards hesitate or try to play hardball on the extension, expect the narrative to shift overnight.”
Davis’ trade value is at an all-time low with his extensive injury history and recent signs of decline. Last season, in just 20 games for the Mavericks, he averaged 20.4 points, 11.1 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.1 steals, and 1.7 blocks per game on 50.6% shooting and 27.0% shooting from three. Still, with a $62.7 million player option for 2027-28, Davis has all the leverage here, and he could use it to reunite with his former Lakers teammate on the Warriors or another surprise team.
“Davis’s camp holds ultimate leverage with his player option. A line in the sand—threatening to opt out next summer and walk straight to Golden State—forces Washington into an immediate ultimatum: max him out now, or watch a prized asset walk for nothing” added Robinson. “The longer this drags out, the more obvious it becomes that suitors are waiting to call the Wizards’ bluff. If Washington pivots away from a max commitment, several contending franchises are already preparing their trade packages.”
We don’t know for sure if LeBron is waiting on Davis, but it cannot be ruled out. With a desire to win and compete at the highest levels, playing alongside the guy you won a title with certainly has some appeal. For it to happen, though, LeBron would have to keep the NBA on edge for a few more weeks.
“The longer this goes on, the closer it gets to when Anthony Davis becomes extension eligible on August 6,” wrote Brett Siegel on X. “Just something to keep in mind if he still hasn’t decided by the start of August.”
Not every team is willing to trade for Davis, but the Warriors are one of the few, and it could be the only thing keeping them in the race for LeBron. With James, Davis, Stephen Curry, and Draymond Green, the Warriors would not be favorites in the West, but they could challenge teams like the Thunder and Spurs with their experience, chemistry, and sheer star power.
Whether that’s enough to sway the King is unclear, but the Wizards have a decision to make either way. As a younger team in development, paying Davis the max doesn’t seem like a good fit, but they are not keen on losing arguably the best big man they’ve had in decades.
