Horse sees a donkey for the first time, and things get weird fast

Horse Sees a Donkey for the First Time, and Things Get Weird Fast

The confusion is impossible to miss.

You never forget the first time you see something that completely rearranges your understanding of the world.

For Boomer, a senior rescue horse, settling into life at Fabled Farm Rescue, that moment came with long ears.

His new family may have forgotten to mention that donkeys lived here. That small detail became important the second Boomer spotted one and made a face so deeply confused that people online discovered horses apparently have a "What on earth is that?" expression.

And Boomer has perfected it.

The older horse had never seen a donkey before, so his first encounter with Obie was less "Hello, new friend" and more "Why does that horse look and sound like that?"

You can pretty much see the questions forming.

Why are the ears so long?

Why does the voice sound like that?"

Why does this strange little horse seem to have opinions already?

Obie, meanwhile, doesn't appear interested in making the introduction less confusing. The donkey has strong feelings about the newcomer and brings exactly the kind of energy you'd expect from someone who believes Boomer should have received a full orientation before arriving.

The post jokes that the rescue may have forgotten to warn Boomer about the donkeys and all the other new animals waiting for him. Judging by his face, a brochure would have helped.

One commenter admitted they genuinely didn't know horses could make such a clear "WTF" face until Boomer came along. His expression is so human that you almost expect him to turn slowly toward the camera and ask who approved this.

Underneath the comedy is something really sweet.

Boomer is a senior rescue horse entering an unfamiliar home filled with new sights, smells, sounds, and personalities. Every introduction is a part of him learning that this place is safe and that these unusual new neighbors are now part of his world.

Even Obie.

Especially Obie.

First meetings between animals are not always instant friendship montages. Sometimes there's uncertainty. Sometimes, one animal spends several minutes trying to determine whether another is a horse with unusual accessories.

That's part of the charm.

How To Safely Introduce Horses and Donkeys

Horses and donkeys can sometimes become companions, but their personalities, body language, and reactions may be different. A slow introduction gives both animals time to investigate without feeling trapped or pressured.

TheDonkey Sanctuary explains that donkeys can be territorial and that introductions with other animals should be managed carefully.

  • Start with a safe barrier. Let them see, hear, and smell each other before sharing the same space.
  • Give both animals room to leave. When they do share an area, make sure there's plenty of space and no tight corners where either animal could feel trapped.
  • Watch the individuals, not just the species. A calm horse and a social donkey may adjust quickly, while another pair may need more time. Let their behavior set the pace.

Boomer may not understand the long ears yet, but something tells me Obie plans to make the introduction unforgettable.
