A family dog became a state hero on July 4 after sprinting into a wild black bear to chase it away from a 6-year-old boy in Connecticut. The Tazzara family’s pet, a husky mix named Bella, earned statewide praise and an official award after saving young Colton Tazzara from a dangerous wild animal attack right in his own front yard.
The close call occurred while the young boy was playing outside his home when a large black bear suddenly sprinted toward him. According to the New York Post, home security cameras captured the scary scene as the predator closed in fast, leaving the child with no time to run or find cover. Just before the bear reached the boy, Bella rushed across the lawn to put herself directly between the wild animal and her young owner.
The boy’s father, Jeffrey Tazzara, said he actually realized something was wrong when he heard his dog make a sound he had never heard before. “A vicious bark, not like she barks and yips and howls and stuff … this was a different kind of bark,” Jeffrey Tazzara said.
The Dog Was Praised For The Heroic Act
Bella cut off the bear’s path just in time, nipping at the animal’s tail to draw its focus away from the boy. The sudden attack worked, as the startled bear turned away from Colton and ran toward the side of the house with Bella right on its heels. “She bit it in the rear end, and the bear ended up crashing into my boat, and then I think it scurried under the boat and then through the back between the houses and into the woods,” Jeffrey Tazzara said.
The dog’s heroic act brought the possibly deadly situation to an end, as the bear fled into the nearby woods without hurting anyone. On July 17, local politicians held a special recognition event to honor the dog for her heroism and officially recognize her for saving the young boy. State officials praised the husky mix for standing her ground against a much larger opponent when her family needed her most.
“Stories like hers remind us of the remarkable bond between families and their pets and the incredible acts of heroism that can happen in our own communities,” State Sen. Stephen Harding said. The state official joined local community members in thanking the brave pet for stepping up during a life-or-death moment.”Congratulations, Bella, on this well-deserved recognition. Connecticut is proud to call you one very good dog,” Stephen Harding said.
