The TV show Survivor has been around for 26 years, and it first premiered on May 31, 2000, on CBS. Not only is it unscripted, but it’s the longest-running reality competition on TV.
So if you were expecting a child and your spouse announced that this is their time to shine and audition to be the next star of Survivor, would you want them to go, or would you be begging them to stay home and help you with the baby?
Now, this woman’s husband is a huge fan of the show, and he’s been dedicatedly tuning in for years. Her husband’s dream is to be able to participate in the latest season of Survivor, and he’s not letting anything stand in his way.
She and her husband have a three-year-old, and she is currently pregnant with their second baby. Her due date is in January, so if her husband auditions for the show and gets accepted, she’s thinking that their baby will perhaps be five or six months old when he leaves to shoot the season, as it occurs in the summertime.
“I am concerned about his health with the starvation, his allergies, his eczema, [and] sun exposure. As a dentist, I'm also not a fan of him not having a toothbrush or toothpaste,” she explained.
“Honestly, also scared that something will happen to him on this adventure when we're so far away. He says no one has died on Survivor so far, but [there are] certainly people who have had to be medically evacuated.”
“I know it's hard to get on the show, so it's not like he is a shoo-in if he applies, but [am I the jerk] for not being supportive of this dream?”
“I'm sure it'll be a ‘once in a lifetime’ experience and that he'll be immersing himself in a game and world that he loves. But we will literally have a baby, and I will have returned to full-time work by then…”
His timing is absurd, and his priority should be his family, not a reality TV show. It sounds like he’s suffering from a classic case of main-character syndrome.
It’s wonderful to have big dreams, but part of being a grown-up, married father of two is recognizing that certain bucket-list items have to take a back seat when you have an infant at home.
Asking a mom with two little kids to be a solo parent so he can starve on an island for a couple of weeks is an unbelievable ask.
She needs to tell her husband he can pick another year to audition, because his timing is super selfish and makes it seem like he’s trying to dodge his responsibilities as a dad.
Survivor isn’t going anywhere. If this is truly his lifelong dream, he can apply in the future and at a far more reasonable time.
