If you went on a date with someone who mocked you over the drink you ordered and could not drop it even days later, would you want to keep seeing them?

This 32-year-old man took a woman the same age as him on a date a few evenings ago, and he decided to get a Mountain Dew to go with dinner.

He had just wrapped up a long day at work, and since he was feeling exhausted, he thought the Mountain Dew would be a great pick-me-up and would help lift the fog of a grueling day.

“I would usually just order water, but I’ve been to this place before and ordered water, but it tasted awful, like how I would assume sewage would taste like,” he explained.

“I thought nothing of it, but for most of the date she kept saying things like, ‘I can’t believe you drink that, how old are you again?, I haven’t drank that since I was 12,’ etc.”

“For reference, I’m 6’2 with an athletic build and mindful of my dental health. I normally don’t even drink the stuff but figured it wouldn’t be such a big deal. Now whenever we talk, she’s sure to slip in ‘have you had your Mountain Dew today?’ or ‘up late drinking Mountain Dew?’ or, if I say I’m tired, she’ll say I should go drink some and wake up.”

He only drank half of it at dinner anyway; it’s not like he was trying to consume a strange amount of Mountain Dew. He did previously tell this girl that he’s in AA, and she was super supportive of that while mentioning she has loved ones who are in it.

So it’s not like he could have ordered alcohol; his choices were limited. On the date, he didn’t remark on what she ordered to eat or drink.

He thinks this girl might have been joking, but he can’t understand why she won’t let it go by now. He doesn’t think he can safely order a Mountain Dew around this girl ever again. The next time she says something, he’s going to tell her to knock it off.

“I’m not gonna stop seeing her over this, but it makes me hesitate on bringing up certain topics like my hobbies, the music I listen to, or the video games I play, not knowing if any of them will be up to the standards of what she thinks a grown man should or shouldn’t be doing,” he continued.

“I just wonder if she keeps nagging me about this, what happens in the future when something nag-worthy actually happens. It’s like she fixates on one ‘negative’ thing, which in hindsight doesn’t seem all that negative to me.”

I don’t think this girl deserves a free pass for teasing him because that’s not what this is; she’s outright mocking him. She’s old enough to know that this is just going overboard. Also, the fact that he’s in AA should make her more in tune to what he’s drinking and not making fun of that. I mean, come on.

She just comes across as awful to me, and I don’t get why he’s not willing to stop seeing her over this. She’s obnoxious, and as soon as she gets over the whole Mountain Dew thing, you can bet she will find something else to nag him about.

There’s no point in dating someone who has you concerned about discussing your hobbies and interests for fear of that person thinking they’re childish.

What advice do you have for him?
