Webb County residents should prepare for dangerous heat this week as the National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory beginning Wednesday.
The advisory takes effect at noon Wednesday and remains in effect until 8 p.m. Temperatures are expected to reach a heat index of up to 109 degrees Wednesday before easing slightly to 107 degrees Thursday.
The advisory also includes La Salle, McMullen, Live Oak, Bee, Goliad, Victoria, Duval, Jim Wells, inland Kleberg, inland Nueces, inland San Patricio, inland Refugio, inland Calhoun and coastal Calhoun counties.
According to the National Weather Service, hot temperatures and high humidity could cause heat-related illnesses.
Residents are encouraged to drink plenty of fluids, remain in air-conditioned spaces, stay out of the sun and check on relatives and neighbors.
The weather service also advises wearing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and limiting strenuous outdoor activities to the early morning or evening hours. Anyone experiencing symptoms of heat exhaustion or heat stroke should take immediate action.
"Do not leave young children and pets in unattended vehicles," the National Weather Service said. "Car interiors will reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes."
