If you’ve ever left a banana on your countertop or a wine glass in the sink (oops), you’ve probably had a fruit fly or two buzzing around your kitchen. They’re annoying, to say the least, and they’re also extremely tough to get rid of. It’s even worse when you have leftovers in the garbage or keep a compost indoors.
Elspeth Velten, the editor-in-chief at Good Housekeeping, keeps a compost bin in her kitchen, so she decided to the Zevo Flying Insect Trap to help keep the fruit flies under control. It was a success! After using the plug-in, Elspeth found a collection of gnats attached to the unit’s inner adhesive.
“Look at all these flies that were attracted to the Zevo trap instead of my counter-top compost,” she said in a video posted to Good Housekeeping’s Instagram account. “It’s so easy to just plug the Zevo in and let it do its job, so that I can collect my food scraps without my apartment feeling like an actual garbage dump.”
Here’s how it works: When you plug the Zevo in, the device trap will emit blue and UV light to attract gnats, fruit flies, house flies, and more. When critters make their way to the wall unit, they’ll stick onto the curved adhesive cartridge–and they’re trapped!
Once it’s time to replace the cartridge, pull the tab to easily discard the sticky surface and replace it with a new one (two are included in this purchase, as well as two plugs. When you run out of cartridges, you can purchase additional refills separately.)
It’s safe to say that we’ve been longtime fans of Zevo here at Good Housekeeping. In fact, this very trap earned a GH Seal, and the brand’s mosquito repellent was named the best overall bug sprays after testing.
Since we’re still in the midst of summer (and flies of all types seem to be buzzing around aimlessly), it’s a good time to try the plug-in out—but if you’re going for a hike, you can always opt for the spray.
