If there's another NFL head coach who's been practically dragged kicking and screaming into greatness like Nick Sirianni has, that's quite an accomplishment. Even after five years as a head coach, two trips to the Super Bowl and a Lombardi Trophy, he apparently needs help with his messaging for players.
That's what Sirianni all but admitted in an interview back in June, according to The Athletic. Sirianni said that he's been using ChatGPT to find true sports stories that he can relay to his players and staff.
"We’ve created stories, things that people are looking up on ChatGPT — fill me in on the letters," Sirianni said. "What keeps it more fresh than what we’ve done?"
He apparently told an AI chatbot to "Give me a great relentless effort true sports story," which churned out the story of Arizona State wrestler Anthony Robles, who won a national championship with just one leg. Sirianni said he then used that story to try and inspire his team.
Outrage
Sirianni might find the use of ChatGPT to find stories to tell the team fun, but the fans do not. Many who feel that Sirianni has done more to hinder than help the Eagles over his five years in charge believe it's yet another mark against him.
"Doesn’t call plays, horrible schemes, can’t make good internal OC hires, can’t make good mid season adjustments, and his locker room inspiration is now coming from ChatGPT. There’s not a single reason this guy should be a coach in the league," one Eagles fan wrote on X.
"This is why the Hurts slander is comical. Consider his success year in and year out with THIS GUY as HC, and a revolving door of OC’s is crazy. Most QB’s would have folded long ago," wrote another.
"Why would he willingly tell you this? Dude is dumber than a box of rocks," a third wrote.
"Why didn’t he explore ChatGPT last year? It could’ve called plays better."
"This is the failure in leadership my QB has to deal with and yet no credit is given for overcoming it time and time again."
In five seasons in charge, Sirianni is 59-26 in the regular season and 6-4 in the playoffs, with two trips to the Super Bowl under his leadership. That truly may not be enough to save him from the first bad season he endures.
