Atlanta Dream star Angel Reese was in the news this past weekend for an incident that happened during the team's matchup on Friday against the Toronto Tempo.
That incident had to do with Tempo coach Sandy Brondello voicing frustration over missed calls by the officials and saying, "Angel, she's a protected species," which resulted in a huge backlash and Brondello getting suspended by the WNBA.
But, Reese is back in the news following the Dream's game on Sunday against Chicago Sky. This time, it had to do with a teammate standing up for her and getting in trouble with officials.
Dream player Rhyne Howard gets a technical foul for standing up for Angel Reese
During the Dream and Sky game, Rhyne Howard received a technical foul after arguing with the officials. She was upset because she believed Reese had been wrongly fouled while going for a rebound with Elizabeth Williams, but the officials instead called the foul on Reese.
Howard complained about the call and got testy with the officials, so the referees gave her a technical foul. It was her second technical foul of the season, which means that according to league rules, she'll be fined $500 by the WNBA. To make matters worse, then, early in the fourth quarter, Reese suffered a non-contact leg injury after planting her foot awkwardly and had to leave the game.
The good news for Atlanta is that the Dream beat the Sky, 93-91, following Jordin Canada making a game-winning layup at the buzzer. So, a win is a win, but it did mean a little more drama for the Dream amid an already drama-packed weekend.
