Gohan’s new Gohan Beast transformation in Dragon Ball Super is easily his strongest power-up so far, but it’s not his most important or influential according to fans.
A new poll was held by Dragon Ball's official social media accounts to commemorate International Gohan Day on May 8, with the results finally going live on July 19. The poll had fans all over the world voting for the best form of Gohan in the franchise, and the result likely comes as no surprise.
As posted on Dragon Ball's official X (formerly Twitter) account, the full results of the poll were as follows:
- The Android Cell Arc - 54%
- The Majin Buu Arc - 30%
- The Saiyan Arc - 10%
- The Frieza Arc - 6%
While Gohan has become a sheer powerhouse in his later years as an adult, this new poll has made it an undebatable fact that Gohan’s prime as a character in Dragon Ball was his pre-teen era, when he first hit Super Saiyan 2 during the Cell Saga.
Gohan's Super Saiyan 2 Transformation Has Never Been Surpassed After 33 Years
Gohan’s winning form from the poll has also received a new official DBZ wallpaper for smartphones that was published for free on Dragon Ball’s official X page (as seen above). The art used on the new wallpaper is an homage to Gohan’s iconic transformation and victory over Perfect Cell during the Cell Games.
The image that makes up the focal point of the wallpaper is from a piece of promotional artwork drawn by Akira Toriyama in 1994, which was also included in the 2013 Dragon Ball Super Art Book, recreating Gohan and Goku’s father-son Kamehameha. In the background of the new wallpaper are assorted panels from that same scene, as Gohan charges up the one-handed Kamehameha that will inevitably kill Cell at the end of the arc.
Gohan first turned Super Saiyan 2 in Dragon Ball Chapter 408, "Son Gohan Explodes!!," which was released in the Feb. 2, 1993, issue of Weekly Shonen Jump magazine. This is the moment Gohan finally achieves the potential that was hinted at since the moment he shocked Raditz with his hidden power in the Saiyan Saga.
Gohan Beast, right down to his achieving the form against Cell Max, was just Dragon Ball Super’s attempt at reviving that early era of greatness for Gohan, which clearly still remains at the forefront of fans’ minds over 33 years later.
Gohan’s peak may already be behind him for the fans, but his power level is only set to increase in Dragon Ball Super’s upcoming manga arcs. While the manga under the new leadership of Toyotarou still has no official release date, Toyotarou has assured fans the manga will eventually return, and Dragon Ball’s official website recently confirmed the manga is still ongoing, despite its ongoing hiatus.
With Gohan taking on a more prominent role in recent manga arcs, including the Moro Saga to be adapted in the upcoming Dragon Ball Super: Galactic Patrol anime adaptation, fans may very well find a new favorite Gohan form to come.
