The music of The Vampire Lestathas given fans a new way to connect with the third season of Louis de Pointe du Lac (Jacob Anderson) and Lestat de Lioncourt's (Sam Reid) love story. Who hasn't been listening to the songs on repeat after each new episode?
Lestat is in his rock star era, which means that we're learning all about his life and his take on things through music. While Louis told Daniel Molloy (Eric Bogosian) his version of events, which led to the novel "Interview With the Vampire" being published in-universe, Lestat's version combines music with the documentary for which Daniel is interviewing him.
Each song has a lot to unpack. Who is it about? Is Lestat telling the truth in the lyrics? Who can say? Still, it is fascinating to think about how the cast connects with the music. While fans have been able to enjoy the music each week, that raises an interesting question: Does Reid himself get to listen to the music, or is he too closely connected to Lestat to do so?
CBR's Rachel Leishman asked Reid about the songs Lestat creates and whether he gets to now listen to the music of the show separated from the character or if he's still too connected to Lestat with it. Reid explained how he connects with the music and the new way he has learned to appreciate it.
“In all honesty, I've listened to them a lot throughout the process," Reid said. "It’s an interesting question: Do I consider what they mean outside of Lestat? I don't, because what they represent for the character and where he is in the story is how I connect with them.
"But I think that’s the joy of the show itself. You can look at these characters, and they reach out and speak to people in personal ways. People can form their own connections with them. It's amazing that people now have another access point to the show, and if people like the songs, that's wonderful.
"[Daniel] put so much work into them, and there’s so much thought behind them. There is a real journey — an arc — if you listen to all the songs in the order in which they were created. I just think that’s so beautiful, and I'm very proud of all the work that Daniel Hart put into it.
"I was saying this earlier today: I listened to all of them maybe a couple of months ago and was blown away by how much work this had been and how much had gone into it. Maybe it was something that I hadn't fully acknowledged before."
The Music of The Vampire Lestat
Reid is no stranger to singing and performing. He was part of the original London cast of the musical Girl From the North Country where he sang "I Want You" by Bob Dylan each performance. With The Vampire Lestat, the songs are such an important part of this season and part of the joy for fans has been hearing new songs week after week. We get to enjoy the music, but that doesn't mean that Reid has that same connection to them as the person playing Lestat and singing them. His idea of listening to the songs in the order in which they appear in the show is pretty fascinating.
We know that Anderson loves songs like “Brutal Love” and that the cast enjoys the music Reid and composer Daniel Hart brought to life this season. But it does feel like a disadvantage for Reid to play Lestat without getting to enjoy the character’s music in quite the same way as the fans do. The success of the official Vampire Lestat artist profile — which had more than 230,000 monthly Spotify listeners at the time of writing — certainly says something about its appeal. Hopefully, Reid can revisit and appreciate his own brilliant work as Lestat sooner rather than later.
