Downtown Midland is hosting Summer Sidewalk Sales this weekend, with more than 20 local businesses planning to take part.

The sales will take place from Thursday, July 23 to Saturday, July 25, with many of the participants located inside Main Street’s Pedestrian Plaza. With no vehicle traffic inside the plaza, visitors will be able to peruse the area’s many retailers and food establishments.

One business participating in the sales is Modern Explorers Guild, a local board and card game shop. It will increase discounts each day of the sale, beginning with 40% off select products on Thursday and culminating in 75% off on Saturday.

Inventory Manager Lisa Brown said Modern Explorers will have playmats, deck boxes, and many different games available for its first sidewalk sale, including Disney’s Lorcana and Star Wars.

“We’re excited to be a part of the sales,” Brown said. “It’s a great chance for people to get things they may not have had a chance to buy quite yet, and we look forward to being able to make room for new and exciting products.”

The sales will also include local eateries, such as Molasses Smokehouse and Bar, Pizza Sam’s, and Heather ‘n Holly.

Heather ‘n Holly owner Aaron Gallagher is excited to see people come by and take a break from the heat with $1 off ice cream cones and caramel corn.

“It’s a good event to come down and enjoy the downtown streetscape,” he said. “There will be opportunities to relax, shop around, and come get some ice cream.”

Another participant is local indie bookstore Bookmarks on Townsend Street, just two blocks from the Pedestrian Plaza. The bookstore plans to offer up to 50% off select new releases and discounts on specific T-shirt designs.

In addition, Bookmarks will host local horror author Jeff Vande Zande for a meet-and-greet on Thursday and Friday. Vande Zande recently published Coven of the Worm Moon, the third and final book in his Michigan-based Orphan Island trilogy.

“We recently refreshed our façade and outdoor benches,” Bookmarks owner Tricia Crivac said. “So we’re excited to have the sidewalk sales to bring people over to experience our new look.”

Other participating locations include Aviator Cookie Company, Brinstar Arcade Bar & Grill, Coyer Candle Co., FILL, Joyful Tantrum, Little Forks Outfitters, Matchbox Tattoo, Midland Area Transportation Study, Molasses, Peel ‘n Pare, Pizza Sam’s, Proper Taco, Riverside Place, Sassy & Chic Boutique, Serendipity Road, Swae Spa and Runa Beauty and Wellness, Two Pines Tattoo Studio, Ways to Wellness, and Willow Classic Ladies Apparel.

Midland Business Alliance President and CEO Tony Stamas is looking forward to the sales, which he called a legacy event for the city.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity to support local businesses and get a great deal at the same time,” Stamas said.

The sales will run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day. However, individual hours may vary by participating business.
