She played Brigitta in The Sound of Music, and now she’s passed the torch to her granddaughter.
Angela Cartwright, who starred in the iconic 1965 film, shared a photo on Instagram on July 21 celebrating her granddaughter’s accomplishment.
“This weekend, I watched my granddaughter, Addie, perform as Brigitta in her theater production of The Sound of Music. It was an emotional moment, thinking back 60 years to when I played Brigitta in the film,” the actress, 73, wrote.
“To sit in the audience and watch a new generation bring this beautiful story to life was truly special,” she continued. “And for my grand daughter to play Brigitta, well some moments remind you just how timeless a story—and the memories it creates—can be. ❤️ #thesoundofmusic #🎶#angelacartwright #iwasbrigittavontrapp.”
Cartwright was born in England, but moved to the United States when she was a year old. At age three, she made her first film appearance in 1956’s Somebody Up There Likes Me, starring Paul Newman. Her older sister, Veronica, was also an actress.
Cartwright then starred on The Danny Thomas Show (which was titled Make Room for Daddy for its first three seasons) from 1957 to 1964 as Linda Williams, the daughter of Thomas’ Danny Williams.
Then came The Sound of Music. The movie starred Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer as Maria and Capt. Georg von Trapp and Charmian Carr, Nicholas Hammond, Heather Menzies, Duane Chase, Debbie Turner and Kym Karath as Cartwright’s six on-screen siblings. The Sound of Music became the highest-grossing film of all time (a record it held for five years) and won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director.
After The Sound of Music, Cartwright continued to work as an actress, appearing on the science fiction TV show Lost in Space as Penny Robinson, the middle child of Guy Williams and June Lockhart. She also had guest roles on My Three Sons, Adam-12 and The Love Boat. Cartwright also works as a photographer.
In 1976, Cartwright married Steve Gullion. They have two children: Becca and Jesse.
Looking back on The Sound of Music in 2025, Cartwright told PEOPLE that she and her fellow child actors from the film still feel like a family.
“We call ourselves ‘Non-Trapps,’ ” she joked. “We visit, we’ve been at births and marriages and deaths and been through experiences together.”
“The five of us – there’s five us now – we have been through so much together and we are like a family,” the actress said. (Carr, who played Liesl, died in 2016 at 73, and Menzies, who played Louisa, died in 2017 at 68.) “We’re like a family that’s all over the world in separate places – and we are! I mean, from Australia all the way to Los Angeles and middle America, and yet we all come together. We’re like just a family again. We pick up where we left off.”
Andrews, now 90, also lives up to her sweet, sunny on-screen reputation in real life, Cartwright said, “and yet she’s sassy and fun and it’s not like she’s this prissy little person. She is real, she’s just great — I love her!”
