Angelina Jolie is looking for “everyone to heal” as her children seek to drop “Pitt” from their last names.
Jolie, 51, shares six children with Brad Pitt: Maddox, 24, Pax, 22, Zahara, 21, Shiloh, 20, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 18. On July 21, Vivienne joined three of her older siblings — Zahara, Maddox and Shiloh — in filing a petition to legally drop “Pitt” from their last names.
The reason for the name change is listed as “personal,” according to court documents obtained by PEOPLE.
“If people knew the whole truth, they would have more sympathy for the children and respect them,” a source close to Jolie tells PEOPLE. “The fact they aren’t speaking ill or sharing things publicly only shows their decency.”
The source adds, “Angie hasn’t been fighting and isn’t angry. She just wants everyone to heal.”
Vivienne is the latest to submit her petition, which seeks to change her name to Vivienne Marcheline Jolie. Zahara is seeking to legally change her name to Zahara Marley Jolie, while Maddox is requesting to become Maddox Chivan Jolie. In 2024, Shiloh filed to drop Pitt from her name and change it to Shiloh Jolie.
“It’s sad to see someone repeatedly publicize their successful alienation of their children from the other parent,” a source close to Pitt, 62, previously told PEOPLE.
Shiloh’s petition was successfully granted in August 2024, while Zahara’s and Maddox’s remain pending. Zahara’s hearing is scheduled for Sept. 28 following Maddox’s on Sept. 14, according to previous court documents obtained by PEOPLE. Most recently, the two published a legal notice in the Los Angeles Daily Journal, confirming their intent to change their names in accordance with California law.
Vivienne’s hearing is scheduled for Nov. 2, according to the court documents.
Neither Jolie nor Pitt have publicly spoken about their children’s name change requests. Pitt last spoke about the importance of surrounding himself with family in a June 2025 red carpet interview with Entertainment Tonight ahead of the release of his movie F1.

“I think you get to my age and see how important it is to surround yourself with the people you know, the people you love, the people that love you back. Friends, family, and that’s it. From there, we get to go make things. It’s a pretty simple, I think, equation,” he said.
