When it comes to swimwear, one-piece bathing suits are not my forte. As a 38DD with decades of experience trying swimsuits, I find them to be smothering, unsupportive, and frumpy. To explain how the Shappelx swimsuit succeeds, I must first explain how most others fail. Underwire swimwear is easier to find in bikinis than in one-pieces. And when it is available, it often seems aesthetic rather than functional. There also tends to be an excess of fabric to accommodate differing torso lengths, which swallows my 5-foot-2 frame. But since I’m raving about this new one-piece, it obviously avoids all of those pitfalls, plus has a slew of highlights, too.

There are five features that make this a standout swimsuit. The first is that though it doesn’t have underwire, it offers the same level of support, but with four times the comfort. Second, its Spanx-like shaping effect tightens things up and amplifies my figure. Third, the back is made with a smoothing fabric that eliminates those, for lack of a better word, rolls that are such a common byproduct of most bras and swimsuits. Fourth, the ruching of the fabric is a small but load-bearing detail. I am a “plus-size” woman who is self-conscious about my gut, and the fabric obscures it while also creating a little bit of an optical illusion that makes my waist look smaller. Lastly, the metal U-shaped ring adds a little bit of pizzazz that keeps this timeless style from being too plain.
