One of the greatest Batmanstories of all time is getting the animated adaptation fans have been begging for, and it already looks perfect.
Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has officially unveiled an early look at the hotly anticipated Batman: Knightfall: Part 1: Knightfall, the first in a new trilogy of animated features adapting the fan-favorite comic book storyline of the same name. Fans also got an early look at a featurette from the film, which showcases just how important the various incarnations of Robin have been to The Dark Knight's story and personal journey, as seen below.
Why Batman: Knightfall Will Be the Biggest DC Animated Feature of the Year
The original Knightfall storyline played out in the pages of numerous DC Comics titles in 1993 and 1994, including Batman, Detective Comics, Sword of Azrael, and Vengeance of Bane, the latter of which served as the foundational setup for the rest of the saga. Knightfall saw the rise of Bane, the hulking, Venom-fueled genius who ultimately "broke the Bat" when he snapped Batman's spine.
This in turn led to the replacement of Bruce Wayne by Jean-Paul Valley, better known as Azrael, who took up the mantle of Batman only to effectively ruin the hero's reputation for years to come thanks to his overtly violent tactics. The storyline also set the groundwork for the modern incarnation of the Batman Family that fans know and love today.
What To Know About Batman: Knightfall: Part 1 Ahead of Its Release
Batman: Knightfall: Part 1: Knightfall will star Anson Mount as the voice of Batman, with Pablo Schreiber stepping into the role of Jean-Paul Valley. The film also features Jack Giffin as the voice of Robin, Bruce Boxleitner as Commissioner Jim Gordon, and Michael Mando as the infamous Bane.
The official logline for Batman: Knightfall: Part 1: Knightfall reads, "When the mysterious behemoth known only as Bane frees Batman's entire rogue's gallery from Arkham Asylum, the Caped Crusader is pushed to his mental and physical breaking point."
Batman: Knightfall: Part 1: Knightfall is set to be followed by Knightquest and KnightsEnd, both of which are expected to be released in 2027. While fans have previously seen the Knightfall storyline adapted elsewhere, the upcoming trilogy will mark the first time that the full comic arc has been adapted in its entirety.
Back in June, audiences got their first glimpse of Batman: Knightfall: Part 1: Knightfall courtesy of a trailer for the film. The trailer opens with Robin telling The Dark Knight that, since an explosion at Arkham Asylum led to the escape of numerous villains, the hero simply hasn't been the same, with the Boy Wonder even suggesting bringing Jean-Paul Valley into the fold in the hopes of evening the odds against the roving threats that have slowly begun to take hold in Gotham.
Batman: Knightfall: Part 1: Knightfall is slated for release on digital platforms on Aug. 25 and on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K UHD on Sept. 8.
