DC Studios' R-rated, animated Batman: Knightfall trilogy kicks off this August. DC has released a knew trailer for the first installment of the highly anticipated Batman movie trilogy, Batman: Knightfall Part 1: Knightfall, revealing its August release date on digital, followed by a physical media release in September.
The R-rated Batman movie premiered at the Annecy International Film Festival and Market. It will also screen at San Diego Comic-Con this week ahead of its August debut.
Batman: Knightfall Part 1 Sets Release Date
Adapted from the iconic "Knightfall" storyline that ran through DC's Batman comics in the 1990s, in Batman: Knightfall Part 1: Knightfall, Arkham Asylum has been destroyed, and all its inmates have been unleashed upon Gotham City. As Batman races to round up some of his greatest enemies, he is pushed to his physical and mental limits and into a final confrontation with a new threat: the man called Bane!
Batman: Knightfall Part 1: Knightfall stars Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Anson Mount as the voice of Batman, Michael Mando as Bane, and Pablo Schreiber as Azrael. Jeff Wamester directed from a screenplay written by Jeremy Adams. Jim Krieg and Kimberly S. Moreau are producing, with Sam Register and Michael Uslan.
Batman: Knightfall Will Adapt a '90s Batman Epic
"Knightfall" was a sprawling Batman event that ran across the entire Batman line from 1993 to 1994. DC divided the epic saga into three acts (Knightfall, Knightquest, and KnightsEnd), creating something for Batman comparable to "The Death and Return of Superman" from around the same time.
At the time, seeing Azrael, another Gotham vigilante, take the Batman mantle from Bruce Wayne, even if only for a short time, was shocking. The story was large enough to draw in most members of the Batman family, including Catwoman and Robin. Even the Justice League got involved, somewhat.
The "Knightfall" storyline is also relevant to Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy. It was one comic book storyline that inspired The Dark Knight Rises, in which Tom Hardy plays Bane.
The Future of DC Animation Under DC Studios
DC Studios took over production of the DC Universe Animated Original Movies line in 2023. Since then, the studio ended the films' shared continuity, bringing several different past films together in the three-part Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earthsseries.
The studio's subsequent animated releases have been standalone stories, including a two-part Watchmen adaptation and Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires. Batman: Knightfall being a trilogy suggest DC Studios want to continue to aim big with these animated movies.
DC Studios also has other plans for Bane. The studio is reportedly eyeing a director for a Bane-Deathstroke team-up movie, which has been given a higher priority following the disappointing box-office performance of Supergirl. That would be the second DC Studios project focused on Batman's villains after Clayface, which opens in October. Meanwhile, updates on the first DC Studios movie featuring the DC Universe version of Batman, The Brave and the Bold, remain scarce.
Batman: Knightfall Part 1: Knightfall releases on digital on Aug. 25, and on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD on September 8.
