Sydney Sweeney is starring in a live-action movie based on the popular Japanese military sci-fi media franchise Gundam. After four months of filming, the sci-fi movie has finally wrapped production.
Per What's on Netflix, photos from the Gundam wrap party have begun appearing on Instagram. This confirms that the movie, which began filming in April 2026 under the working title Teardrop, has wrapped. Production was based out of Village Roadshow Studios on the Gold Coast, with shooting also taking place in Brisbane and Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia.
What Is Gundam About?
Gundam follows rival mech pilots fighting on opposite sides of a decades-long war between Earth and its space former colonies. “As shifting allegiances and a growing threat set them on a collision course for one another, they’re pulled into a high-stakes race across the stars that could define the fate of humanity," reads the logline.
"With awe-inspiring battles, intimate human emotion, and an epic cinematic scale, this is Gundam like it’s been seen before," the logline concludes.
The live-action Gundam movie began development at Legendary Pictures in 2018. Brian K. Vaughan, the writer of the acclaimed comic book series Y: The Last Man and Saga, was originally brought in to write the movie, with Jordan Vogt-Roberts attached as director. Netflix was also signed on to distribute it.
However, by 2024, Vogt-Roberts and Netflix were no longer involved with the movie. Sweet Tooth showrunner Jim Mickle was hired to write and direct Gundam, with casting beginning in 2025. Ultimately, by January 2026, Netflix reacquired the distribution rights to Gundam in a full-circle moment.
Gundam will be Sweeney's second big-budget movie after the 2024 box office flop Madame Web. Starring alongside the fan-favorite actor are Noah Centineo, Jackson White, Shioli Kutsuna, Nonso Anozie, Michael Mando, Javon "Wanna" Walton, Oleksandr Rydynskyi, Ida Brooke, Gemma Chau-Tran, and Jason Isaacs.
Sydney Sweeney Remains Booked and Busy
Gundam is one of the many movies that fans can look forward to seeing Sweeney in over the next few years. After breaking out playing Cassie Howard in HBO's Euphoria, Sweeney made the jump to the big screen. Some of her biggest movies have been Anyone But You and The Housemaid.
Sweeney has wrapped production on The Custom of the Country and is about to begin filming The Housemaid's Secret. The latter is the sequel to The Housemaid, which made over $400 million at the box office last year.
She is also attached to Dune writer Eric Roth's adaptation of a Reddit short, I Pretended to Be a Missing Girl, plus two video game adaptations — Split Fiction and OutRun. Sweeney will play Kim Novak in Scandalous!, a romantic drama about the Vertigo actress’ relationship with Sammy Davis Jr. in the 1950s.
Other upcoming projects include Hollow and Barbarella. The former is an erotic reimagining of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. The latter is a remake of the '60s comic book film of the same name, with Edgar Wright attached to direct. Both movies are in the works at Sony.
Gundam does not yet have a release date, but will stream exclusively on Netflix.
