With the Aug. 3 MLB trade deadline rapidly approaching, managers of those clubs involved in being buyers are beginning to express their trade deadline wish lists.
In the case of the Chicago Cubs, manager Craig Counsell has a simple message he's passed along to the Chicago front office.
"Just make the team better"
According to Patrick Mooney of The Athletic, Counsell's message to the front office was as clear and concise as a manager can be.
“Just make the team better,” Counsell said. “I don’t think there’s a specific to that at all right now. Most teams are in the same spot regarding that. There’s a lot of ways to make the team better."
Despite being 13 games above .500 at 56-43, there at certainly a few ways that the Cubs can get better for the final two months of the season heading into October.
What are the moves to be made?
Chicago's pitching staff has been decimated by injuries this season and it's reflected by the starting staff ranking 29th in Wins Above Average at 0.6 and the bullpen ranking 19th in the same department.
The Cubs have one of the best offenses in all of baseball, meaning that even the slightest of upgrades to the pitching staff could be the difference in a NL wild-card round exit or first NLCS appearance since 2017.
