Georgia running back Dante Dowdell was hospitalized with serious injuries following an ATV accident, Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart confirmed on Tuesday at SEC Media Days, leaving the transfer's status for the upcoming season uncertain.
Smart said Dowdell was injured near his home in Picayune, Mississippi, during the Georgia football team's summer break, with specific details of the accident not yet known. "He's injured," Smart told reporters.

Dowdell is being treated at Shepherd Center in Atlanta, a hospital that specializes in the treatment and rehabilitation of spinal cord and brain injuries, according to ESPN.
Smart offered a cautiously optimistic update on his condition while acknowledging the uncertainty ahead. "He's out of the really tough range, but as far as his complete health and coming all the way back, I don't know what that looks like in terms of this year," Smart said.
The 21-year-old senior running back transferred to Georgia this offseason after spending last season at Kentucky, where he rushed for 560 yards and three touchdowns on 112 carries as the Wildcats' second-leading rusher.
Dowdell's college career has taken him through four programs, beginning at Oregon in 2023, where he rushed for 90 yards and a touchdown in six games as a freshman.
He then transferred to Nebraska in 2024, where he led the team with 614 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns.
He arrived at Georgia in January as part of an effort to rebuild the Bulldogs' backfield depth following the departures of Roderick Robinson to the transfer portal and Josh McCray, who exhausted his eligibility.
Dowdell was expected to compete for carries behind returning starter Nate Frazier this season.
A four-star recruit out of Picayune Memorial High School, he was named Mississippi's Mr. Football as a senior after rushing for 2,165 yards and 31 touchdowns, and helped lead his high school to back-to-back state championships.
Smart emphasized the support Dowdell and his family have received from the program since the accident.
"He's just a tremendous kid with a great family," Smart said.
"We're very supportive of them. Our players have been up there to see him. It's a really tough deal."
