The Indiana Fever was putting the finishing touches on a franchise-record scoring night, up nearly 30 on the Connecticut Sun with under a minute left in the third quarter. That’s when things got heated between Caitlin Clark and Sun guard Saniya Rivers.
Clark picked up her seventh technical foul of the 2026 season during Wednesday’s 123-88 win, a double technical assessed after she and Rivers exchanged words following a foul call. With her second technical foul, she is one incident away from a mandatory one-game suspension.
The sequence started when Clark drew a foul on Sun center Olivia Nelson-Ododa after being defended by Rivers. Rivers waved her arm in response, and Clark fired back by pointing toward the scoreboard, which read 95-67 in Indiana’s favor at the time.
“She said she was locking me up, so I said, ‘Scoreboard!’” Clark explained after the game. “The ref didn’t like that.”
Sophie Cunningham pulled her teammate away from the exchange, but the technical foul stood. Clark still finished with 27 points on 8-of-13 shooting, 5-of-9 from three, and 11 assists in just 27 minutes, numbers that would headline most nights if not for the foul trouble hanging over her season.
Under league rules, an eighth technical triggers an automatic one-game suspension, with every second technical after that adding another missed game. At her current pace, seven techs through 27 games, Clark is on track to sit for at least two games before the regular season ends. Clark now sits tied with Atlanta Dream forward Angel Reese for the most technical fouls in the WNBA this year.
Asked directly whether she plans to dial back the intensity that keeps landing her in front of officials, Clark didn’t hesitate.
“I’m never gonna back down,” she said. “That intensity and that fire is what makes me, me. But also knowing that my team needs me and finding a good balance of that. I don’t think I’m gonna be playing with that in the back of my head. I think that may hinder my play a little bit.”
The Fever’s Balancing Act With Caitlin Clark
Fever coach Stephanie White isn’t asking Clark to change who she is on the court, but she’s also not pretending the math doesn’t matter. With 17 games left on Indiana’s schedule and the team fifth in the standings, one game back of the fourth-place Dallas Wings, every absence carries weight in a tightening playoff race.
“She’s just got to pick and choose,” White said. “The biggest thing is she knows, she has awareness about it. We’ll try to help her when we can, but sometimes we can’t.”
Indiana has typically appealed Clark’s technical fouls, and this one carries a case for rescission given how mild the actual language was. But the league office, not the Fever, will make that call, and history suggests these appeals don’t always land.
For now, Clark heads into the All-Star break with three straight wins, a franchise scoring record, and a growing target on every whistle that goes against her. The Fever don’t play again until July 28 in Seattle, giving both sides a short window to decide how much longer this tightrope walk can last before it costs Indiana a game it can’t afford to lose.
