Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark turned a lot of heads when she and Connecticut Sun guard Saniya Rivers had a heated verbal exchange during Wednesday's game at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
Clark, who finished with 27 points and 11 assists in the Fever's 123-88 blowout win, got into it with Rivers with 29 seconds remaining in the third quarter. It came after Clark was fouled by Sun center Olivia Nelson-Ododa.
Rivers appeared to say something to Clark, and the Fever playmaker responded by telling the WNBA veteran to "look at the scoreboard." The referees then assessed a double technical foul against the two as a result of the exchange.
It was initially unknown what Rivers said that triggered Clark's trash talk, but the Fever All-Star addressed the incident in the team's postgame press conference when Kelsey Mitchell asked what led to her technical foul.
"Well, she said that she was locking me up, so I said scoreboard. And the ref didn't like that," Clark revealed.
For what it's worth, Clark shot 8-of-13 from the field. She was 5-of-9 from the 3-point line, so she was definitely far from being locked up during the game. Furthermore, the Fever were up 95-67 at that point.
Perhaps Rivers was simply trying to annoy Clark since she wears her heart on her sleeve. The former Iowa scorer is never afraid to voice what she's feeling. If that's the case, Rivers certainly succeeded since Clark received her seventh tech of the season.
Clark is now just one tech away from an automatic suspension. Despite that, though, the 24-year-old guard has no plans to change her behavior or approach to the game.
