Everything was going perfectly for country music group The Sound during their audition on Tuesday’s episode of America’s Got Talent.
The audience and the judges — Mel B, Simon Cowell, Howie Mandel, and Sofia Vergara — were swaying in their seats to their smooth harmonies on John Denver’s song “Take Me Home, Country Roads.” The audience was clapping along, and Vergara and Cowell were even mouthing the words.
Then the band paused for dramatic effect, eliciting cheers from the audience, who was largely on their feet. That’s when someone from the crew scurried onstage, presumably to take away the microphones and set the stage for the next act. (See the moment at about three minutes into the video below.)
While the Sound, made up of a father and two sons from, Romeo, Mich., wasn’t fazed and came back to offer a sweet final “country roads,” the judges took notice of what was happening.
Mel B gave an “Oh!”
“Listen, I’m not really that big of a fan of country music,” the former Spice Girl said, “but this made me so happy. Your harmonies were just perfection.”

It was Mandel who mentioned what had gone down.
“What I loved at the end is you held so long that our crew came out and was about to take you off the stage,” Mandel said. “I loved it. Thank you.”
Vergara was just as effusive.
“That was amazing. I love country music. That song is one of my favorites,” Vergara said. “You guys being a family, the voices, everything was perfect. I think America’s gonna fall in love with you. I think [the audience] all fell in love with you. I fell in love with you.”
Cowell’s feedback was mixed.
“I think everyone’s gonna like you. I mean, how can you not?” But, he continued, “I mean, look, being honest, that was obviously a very safe, nice audition. That’s the riskiest thing you can do. If you make it through to the next round, I think you should sing a song that you kind of make into a country song. Going forward, we have to go beyond the safe.”
Mandel gave a yes, as did Vergara and Mel B.
Cowell appeared to be weighing his thoughts, when he revealed that he would be voting for the performers to move forward, too.
The judges spent the end of the episode reviewing all of the acts they had voted through to the next round.
Their impossible job was to whittle down a list of roughly 100 approved acts to a group of 44, who will perform in the live shows. Host Terry Crews reminded them that, since he and each of the others had awarded two Golden Buzzers, 10 spots for the Lives were already taken.
The end of the episode teased that the judges’ callbacks will happen in two weeks.
